Since April 1991, the Köstritzer black beer brewery, a subsidiary of the Bitburger brewery, has emerged as of one of the most modern breweries in Thuringia. In September 1993, it was with great pride we (re-) introduced the "original Köstritzer black beer".

Bottle. Dark brown with nice off-white head. Delicate aroma of caramel, malt and a bit of roasty notes. Medium sweet, low bitterness, drinkable. I like it.

Very dark brown with ruby highlights and a small beige head. Aromas of vegemite, soy and grains. The taste is exactly the same but in reverse order with a sweet malt backbone and a little charcoal. Not at all bad but doesn’t reach any great heights.

Dark colour with stable off-white head. Rosted malts in the nose and taste. Lighter body. Nice beer but not special

A descent German Black beer with a nice aroma and roasted caramel taste that isn’t too sweet or harsh. Pitch black in color and drinks smooth with a refreshing aftertaste. I found it served at some local establishments and at a local beer distributor. It isn’t the best dark beer I have tasted but it is very enjoyable and better than several others I have tried. I like this better than Sam Adam’s Black beer.

Mørk brun med lys brunt høyt skum. Brunt sukker og maltlukt. Sukkersøt smak med noe krydderier. Lite kullsyre

33cl bottle. Dark brown beer with almost no foam. Absolutely cocoa dominated with some caramel and nut, but no coffee. :) Light Co2. It is OK, but not a very big score for a high price.

Keg at the Fountain, Ely. Not quite black, rather dark brown and somewhat translucent if you hold the glass at the right angle. Not a lot of head but that’s ok. Light scent of malt, acorns, caramel. Sweet nutty malty taste: a uniform profile with a short finish. Slight bittersweet aftertaste. Light but carbonated palette. Pleasant but I would not drink it all night.
