Since April 1991, the Köstritzer black beer brewery, a subsidiary of the Bitburger brewery, has emerged as of one of the most modern breweries in Thuringia. In September 1993, it was with great pride we (re-) introduced the "original Köstritzer black beer".

Reviewed 3/12/13. 11.2 oz bottle poured into the PROPER glass (ie. a Kostritzer pilsner glass). A: Pours a dark ruby red color. The head is a two finger mocha shade that fades rather quickly, befitting a lager. A decent amount of lacing is left on the glass. S: I notice some roasted nuts, chocolate, roasted barley, lager yeast, and coffee. It does a good job of T: Drier than the aroma suggested. The initial flavor is mainly roasted barley and coffee. Some lager fruitiness enters the palate in the middle, and the finish is more roasted barley, imparting a very dry feel devoid of significant sweetness. Not complex or exciting, but pleasant. M: Most pilsners wish they had this level of crisp dryness. Nothing really stays on the palate flavor-wise; I could see the argument for this being ’watery’ in terms of feel. Also thin, airy, and well carbonated. O: While it is a bit meh flavor-wise, the drinkability factor is superb, as it should be in a good lager. I won’t rush out to the store to buy more, but this really does hit the spot for me.

the aroma is caramel and toasty with hints of vanilla and dried fruits... the taste is caramel with notes of roasted malt, toast, dark fruits, brown sugar and raisin... bitter, dry and, a little bit, sweet aftertaste... nice schwarzbier...

A fresh dark beer with some malty, herbal and sweet licorice notes. Good taste but best is it’s freshness.

Light beer (4.8%) with a fine dark colour. Fruity and chocolate, sweet but some balanced bitterness on final.

Now this is one fine German Black Beer! It is dark, hearty, but it is no porter or stout: it is true to the style!!! Schwartzbier is good brew for those that acquired the taste and this is a fine example of it! All I can say is just try it. If you like black beers I don’t think you will disappointed!!!

Marrón chocolate, espuma media (3 dedos). Aroma a chocolate. Agradable y ligera en boca, predominando caramelo y chocolate y algo de vainilla. Final más amargo, saliendo el lúpulo. Buen ejemplo del estilo. Notable.

Bottle, bb 8.12.15. Pours dark brown, almost black, clear, head brownish with moderate retention, and marked lacing. Aromas of roasted malts, coffee and hints of chocolate. Dry, with subtle roasted notes, light bitterness. Light bodied, moderate carbonation, relatively smooth and drinkable. Nice session beer.

500 ml draft. Pours a translucent brown color with a small foamy beige head. Rich roasted malt aroma is subtle. Some chocolate notes. Flavor is sweet roasted malt with hints of cola and coffee. Bittersweet malty middle. Dry, nutty finish has a wisp of hop bitterness.. I really enjoyed this.

UPDATED: JUN 7, 2015 Similar to a chocolate stout without the heaviness or any strong alcohol flavour. Only held back by a lack of complexity but very creamy finish ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
