Tasted on 1/7/14 from a capped 330mL bottle purchased at Craft Brewed. Pours nearly opaque dark amber with a thick tan head that slowly recedes to average lace. The nose is more yeasty bread than anything else with some darkly roasted malt and just a touch of noble hops. The flavor is the same, with more bread than anything else, but the noble hops coming through a bit more and the roasted bitterness on the back of the palate. The body is light with average carbonation and a medium bread and lightly bitter finish.

2015 BJCP Category: 8B Schwarzbier

AROMA: Dark roasted malt, but sweet iced coffee scent, too. Familiar lager aroma. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Deep ruby red/mahogany; seemingly black. Body is filtered. Small, tan, foam. 2/3

FLAVOR: Lightly sweet dark malts. Mild bitterness in the background. Finishes with some coffee/roasted malt flavor. Aftertaste does not linger. Not very exciting, but not bad. 13/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body, though texture is a bit watery. Neither crisp nor flat. Smooth. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Seems like a pedestrian Schwarzbier; not bad - just far from great. 6/10

No information about the malts, hops and drinktemperature on the bottle, but nice labels and bottle. A black beer with a nice cappuccino head, wonderful, malty, roasty, bread, light bitter, finish is bread, body is thin, too much water, (I have 0.33l bottle with batch E401V and best-before 04.08.16)

Very tamed but distinct aroma. Very clean fermentation aroma, no apparent hop aroma, a moderate roasted malt character that lends itself toward a dark cocao character. A slight fresh baked bready malt slides underneath giving the nose a touch of sweetness. Deep black in appearance with garnet highlights and a dense copper head, that cuts itself in half in short order. Though, it lingers as the beer goes down. Brilliant clarity. A moderate bitterness lent over from both hop bitterness and roasted malt. Dark chocolate notes with an underlying nutty tones-roasted chestnuts. Roasted malt notes throughout. Very dry finish with a slight astringency lasting on from the roasted malts inviting you to take another sip. Low herbal hop character peaks through but overall clean flavor characteristics. Medium full body, seemingly low carbonation level and slightly creamy texture. Overall, a very good and easy-everyday drinking beer. Captures the best characteristics of the style and at a great price point. One of the better ones I’ve had, though, I’ve still only had a handful. I would put this beer with creamy and savory dishes. Or with a sandwich like a Reuben.
