Nearly black with ruby highlights. A slight tan head develops but disappears quickly. Interesting aroma of coffee, chocolate, and vegetables. Medium bodied, fairly lively. I’m not quite sold on the flavor. It starts pretty good with coffee, bitter chocolate, and chicory. The finish is a bit of a disappointment. A touch of smoke but an aftertaste of ash. Not a bad beer.

Archetypical German Schwarzbier with DDR origins, blackish in colour with a beige head, caramelly aroma with roasted malts, smooth mouthfeel with deep caramel malts as well as oasted bitterness and a pungent but brief bitterhops ’sting’ in the finish. Still a very good example of its style.

50cl bottle bb172015, local. Deep mahogani brown-near black pour with generous, stable beige head. Aroma is less inviting, revealing its basic black lager character here: subdued dark malts and strange meaty metallics, which reappear in the taste as a mineral green vegetable (spinache, leek) note. Main body is composed of democratically roasted malts, very light ash, and generous diluted caramel. Semi-dry palate. I do not mind having this benchmark and near-only consolidated Schwarz once in a while, but would prefer to sample more smaller batch, unpasteurised Schwazrbier specimens, a dying style even in the (former) East now it seems.

500ml bottle. Pours very dark reddy brown with a medium head. Aroma is dusty Weetabix, cola and coffee. Taste is watery cola to start and some yeasty beef on the finish.

Beautiful looking but rather watery beverage with faint aromas of roasted malts and coffee. Some slightly sour fruits shine through. Disappointing.

Clear but nontransparant appearance, medium head. Roasted malt, caramel and herbal aromas, semi sweet coffee taste. Good Schwarzbier.

Drink cold (8°) Eye: pours a deep black colour with some sort of beige stripes in it. thick long-lasting beige to brown head. Nose: smoke, coffee and roasted malts, spices as well such as pepper. smells even a bit burned Mouth: coffee, chocolate and smoke Palate: coffee, chocolate and smoke again a bit watery though Overall: a bit one sided because of the strong malts and smokiness. not bad though if you like this kind of beer.

I actually bought it in a mini keg so my rating might have been different if I drank from a bottle. The beer had a strong but pleasant smell, the looks keg is very appealing, and the beer itself is good with a dark black body and white slightly creamy foam head, light taste, watery feeling when she goes down, bitter and cheap after taste but overall a great beer

Een echt zwart bier. Maar de smaak is niet mijn ding. Een vreemde specifieke smaak. Ofwel ga je het lekker vinden ofwel zoals mij redelijk slecht

(Bottle) Dark red brown with tiny short-lived head. Vegetable aroma with some pleasant woody mousey notes. Light body, decent carbonation. Taste is predominantly mainstream European plis / lager - light, malty with some vegetabley hop flavours - with some added subtle black treacle and dark chocolate notes. It’s ok, but doesn’t really work for me.

Keg at Zeitgeist Lambeth, served in an elaborate handled glass. Black, small white head. Aroma is toned down, vegetal, socks. Body is light, touch of spritz, slightly foamy. Taste is malty, some liquorice and black treacle. Fine, drinkable.
