KyotoLefty (6145) - Kyoto, JAPAN - MAR 21, 2010
Very dark brown, but not quite black. A tall, creamy white head. Aroma of burnt malt. Slight caramel and coffee. A touch of hops and raisins (apples?). Aroma stronger than usual. Sweetish flavor, lots of caramel, not as much roasted flavor as is in the nose. Slight burnt aftertaste, still sweet, a bit of hop dryness, but not much. Not roasted enough. Not enough hops really. A nice tasting beer, to be sure, but on the sweet end of the style. A little more like a German dunkel than is usual for a Czech dark.

500ml on tap in a bar in Prague. Near black in colour with reddish tones and a foamy tan head. Caramel and toffee aroma. Flavour was very sweet, with a touch of fruit and milk chocolate and demerara sugar in the finish. Ok.

larsga (6120) - Oslo, NORWAY - JUN 15, 2009
Biggish yellowish beige head. Dark red translucent body. Burnt earthy milky licorice aroma with toffee and straw notes, quite harmonic. Dry-sweetish roasty earthy metallic licorice taste with chocolatey notes. Mid-bodied. Slightly watery mouthfeel. Dry roasty licorice and straw aftertaste. Quite nice, but a tad too watery. Would be great unfiltered. (0.5l bottle, Meny, Oslo.)

Svesse (6041) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - JUN 27, 2007
(Bottle, Monk’s Café, Stockholm) Mahogany brown colour with huge, beige head, leaving some lacing. Malty, rather sweet nose with notes of dried fruit, brown sugar, caramel and wort bread. Malty, grainy taste with sweetish notes of brown sugar and dark rye bread. Not very bitter, slightly below medium body, rather sweet. Very tasty considering the low abv. Nice.

5o cl bottle. Ruby/brown, fine head. A bit sweet, rather thin and watery at first, but it get a bit more of a body after a while. But you hardly expect a lager drinker to wait until the beer is warm, do you?

Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized descriptions after the express ratings.
-------- /> How: Tap in some non-beer-geek restaurant in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic
The look: Dark brown body with a medium beige head
To me a typical Czech Tmavé (Czech Black Lager) is: Dark malts and barely any roastiness sensation. Some dark fruits flavours (raisins with a little figs, dates and prunes) wrapped in smooth dark caramel (borderline toffee) and a subtle chocolate note. A bit bready. Moderately sweet without much hops presence and only a mild bitterness (voluntary unbalanced it seems). Very smooth body, like a watery cream.
This one: As above but a bit sweeter (too sweet) and syrupy than average with some liquorice flavours. Something felt “artificial” about it. Inferior Tmavý.

UPDATED: MAY 19, 2009 Re-rate 1/16/08: Bottle. Dark reddish brown with a medium, quickly disappearing, off-white head. Malty aroma with toasted bread and hints of milk chocolate. Sweet toasted malt flavor with caramel, light hoppy bitterness in the finish. A bit watery. OK, but definitely lacks in character and not as good as I remembered it. 6/3/5/2/11=2.7

Bottle. Dark brown with a pretty big beige head. Lightly roasted malt and some caramel in the nose. Flavor is nice sweet malt which finishes with a bit of hop bitterness. A light to medium body. A nice dunkel. 6/4/6/3/13=3.2
