5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
The best dark beer I have ever had. Note that I have only tried the Velkopopovcky Kozel Cerny brewed in the Czech Republic. This is the best dark beer in the world. Not too sweet no bite, just right.
Of course, Velkopopovycky just won the gold medal in Belgium for best beer in all three categories: light, medium and dark. This should come as no surprise to people that actually know beer.
I would also like to point out that in the Czech Republic, where Kozel comes from, 57% of the people prefer Cerny (dark) Kozel to medium, light or premium light. I agree with them. After all, Czechs drink more beer per capita than any other people in the world.

Dark brown beer with tick light brown foam. overly sweet scent of burnt malt, taste and palate reminds me of root beer. Bottom line: completely average beer.

(Bottle) Clear dark brown with loose tan head. Subtle aroma with notes of chocolate, toffee and perhaps coffee. Light to medium body with medium carbonation, with some stickiness. The taste is quite light for a dark beer; it starts with some fairly refreshing tang balanced with some chocolatey malt. The mid palate steadily develops a toffee / sugar sweetness which subsides before it becomes cloying, to be replaced with some vaguely chocolate notes and some very subtle bitterness. It’s easy drinking, un-complex, not great.

Although Kozel's Svetly is average in its segment, the Černy is quite a good dark lager. It is certainly well flavoured for the style, but still light enough to drink that a session could be had on such a dark beer. Personally my favourite of Kozel's beers.
