Glouglouburp (6075) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 7, 2008
Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized descriptions after the express ratings.
-------- /> How: Tap at U Radnice, Prague
The look: Clear blonde body with a smallish white head
To me a typical Czech Světlý 12° and above is: Well malted body with plenty of biscuits and cereals. Sweetness level is in the light-medium range with some honey flavours and a light caramel presence (3/4 honey, 1/4 caramel). Fruity flavour limited to a light citrus flavour. Medium carbonation. Finish is dry and moderately bitter with a light citric touch. After-taste of dry grassy/herbal hops with a light dry spiciness character.
This one: As above but with a slimmer body, less assertive hops and some minerals in the finish. Boring and way below average.

(Rating #1538)

Quack-Duck (7958) - Down South, GERMANY - MAY 27, 2007
amber colour, nice and long-lasting white head. Fruity taste, malty and slightly hoppy. This fruitiness appears in all beers brewed by Krakonos, which makes them interesting and fascinating.

pivnizub (8920) - Bochum, Porúří, GERMANY - APR 12, 2007
Bottle: Deep golden coloured, small, but stable white head; sweetish grainy nose, but also fruity with traces of oxydation; moderate sweet-bitter flavour, light to medium bodied, detectable malty base; fruity-bitter finish. Not great.......

Bottle. Potent sweet saazy floral aromatic hops and something that reminded me of compressed air or stale air being released from a tire (don’t ask). We’ll go with "spicy nose." Deep, rich golden hue and an ephemeral white head...look out, it’s gone. Crisp, spicy and bitter sum up th mouthfeel - and each of those three is intense. Whew on that powerful spicy floral bitterness. Whew. There’s honey to be found, too. Aftertaste is long and verydry but stale. Definitely interesting, one ballsy mofo.

Quite good. One of the best looking labels and a very nice and unique artistic cap on the bottle. Initial aroma is very hoppy. There is also malt, spices and some light fruit. A great looking pilsner. Lots of bubbles. A large white head that lasted a long time and never completely fades, leaving a thin layer of foam on the beer and lacing on the glass. Complex flavors. The hops are more bitter than floral and the fruit qualities are minimal. There is a lightly sweet malt base under those hops. Just a hint of soap but it doesn’t detract from the beer. This one becomes more flavorful as it warms. Great body for the style. Very easy to drink, even for having more alcohol than many of the style. Best-by date of 6/4/06.

Bottle, at home. Golden with off-white head, mostly diminishing, fair lacings. Aroma moderate malty and hoppy. Flavor moderate sweet and bitter. Light body, watery, soft carbonated. Very fine pilsener, good strength.

Light hoppy nose, some underlying bread malts. Golden body, small white head. Clean malty flavor, with a light hoppy note.

UPDATED: MAR 24, 2008 The Lure:
Dark golden hues offer barely any head retention. Sweet honey and pear fruitiness remain subtle. Aroma and appearance are largely deficient in this bottle.

The Festivities:
Honeyed maltiness builds into a slick rotundity which grew on me. A nice back bitterness of hop resin appreciates the minty herbal quality which precedes it. Sadly filtered, this is a good bohemian pilsner, but there is absolutely nothing special about it. Well-made no doubt, but very tame.

Transcendence:
Beware of those who call themselves giants.
