Maybe a dessert-like beer for North America, but really a lovely balance of sweetish malts bitters (hops) and aromas to go with. Very pleasant.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Roasty, nutty malt aroma, with notes of coffee, cola, and maple syrup. Frothy diminishing head on a dark brown liquid. Just less than medium body, rather sweet yet slightly dry, with a hint of sourness. Major flavors are cola, roasted almonds, and maple syrup...it’s remarkably quite like a less sweet Coca-Cola without the buzzing carbonation. Very quaffable, but the sweet cola-like flavor is a bit odd.

Coffee? I get something more like sweetened ice tea and kept looking vainly for something to balance that out. It’s drinkable, but I wouldn’t look too hard for it.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 7/20
A nice surprise; better than I expected. Mild, slightly earthy nose. creamy smooth head and a decievingly pleasant slightly sweet maltiness.Coffee-nutty flavorthat would go well with a rich beef based meal. I’ll be drinking this again.

Like a damp schwartzbier with plenty of third world character. Ugh.

1.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Really a let down after their pale double bock. I could tell that this beer was trying to get a Pilsner body and smoothness with the flavor of a shwartzbier, but it failed miserably. Flavors are very underwhelming, but are just obtrusive enough to cover up any Pilsner-type flavors that might have redeemed it. No good.

Now this was a damn good beer!! I have only had a few Czech beers, but I will vouch for this nations beer making abilities any day of the week. This is a very smooth beer, with just a little sweetness to it. The name, ’Black Lion’ is a bit deceiving if you are expecting a ’dark’ beer. This beer is a rich caramel color, a deep red, really a beautiful beer. And the flavor is something to write home to your mother about too!
