draft at Kraus in Hirschaid
lightly hazed golden amber body with a small white head. simple sweet grain / corn in the nose, similar flavor but with touches of DMS. tart and starchy flavor, low hop presence, doughy yeast, seems stale, lifeless and simple, with an oily and very thin texture. the smoke is nearly impossible to find; I guess it comes across as some sort of cigarette ask and stale, dried pork, but I wouldn’t even guess there *was* smoked malt in here if I wasn’t told beforehand. a simple beer in poor shape, uncared-for by the people who brought it into the world.

Bottle at Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig, 2012, London. Pours glowing gold with a fine, white foam head. Moderate smoke nose, some caramel. Medium to big sweet flavor with sturdy smoke, honey ham, caramel. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet finish with understated smoked malt character beside more carmamel and sugar-coated meat. Nice rauchbier. I like it.

Swing-top by 21.02.13. Smoky nose, woodsy with some malty sweetness but more reminiscent of autumn a crunchy dried leaves than a pig roast. Pours deep amber with a creamy, rocky beige head. Smoky taste is moderately dry, malty light-medium body with a smoky aftertaste. Hope this doesn’t come off as pretentious, but I love the authenticity here -- the smoke is natural and a little bit raw.

Easy drinking, smoky, but not very heavy on the bacon. Dry with a soft carbonation and a light hop bite.

Bottle @ Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig. The pour’s deep red with a tiny white head. The nose is chocolate and mild jammy cherry. Deep roasted malt sweetness, some notes of floral honey. The taste is light cherry sauce, some cocoa and mocha. Medium body, soft. Quite drinkable.
