Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is medium to dark amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain, cookie), lightly hoppy (herbs, apricot), with notes of smoked meat, DMS (cabbage!), smoke/ash. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter, unclean. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, slightly metallic. While the first whiff had some promise, it didn’t take long for the cabbagey odor to appear. Fairly dirty aftertaste as well. A dumper.

Kita (1914) - Koper, SLOVENIA - DEC 29, 2012
On tap, 0.25l. Hazy amber brown color with thin and tan-like head. Lightly smoked malt aroma and notes of grassy hops. Tastes gently smoked with light bitterness in the aftertaste. Medium body, slick texture and soft carbonation in palate. It’s not Schlenkerla, but still fairly pleasant...

draft at Kraus in Hirschaid
lightly hazed golden amber body with a small white head. simple sweet grain / corn in the nose, similar flavor but with touches of DMS. tart and starchy flavor, low hop presence, doughy yeast, seems stale, lifeless and simple, with an oily and very thin texture. the smoke is nearly impossible to find; I guess it comes across as some sort of cigarette ask and stale, dried pork, but I wouldn’t even guess there *was* smoked malt in here if I wasn’t told beforehand. a simple beer in poor shape, uncared-for by the people who brought it into the world.

Leighton (18711) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - OCT 10, 2012
Bottle at Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig, 2012, London. Pours glowing gold with a fine, white foam head. Moderate smoke nose, some caramel. Medium to big sweet flavor with sturdy smoke, honey ham, caramel. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet finish with understated smoked malt character beside more carmamel and sugar-coated meat. Nice rauchbier. I like it.
