UPDATED: MAR 7, 2012 Tap. Very dark reddish brown almost black colour. Heavy frothy beige head. Aroma of coffee, caramel, roasted. Taste medium sweet, light to medium bitter. Minor watery finish. Not bad, but rather uninteresting.

Had a bottle at lunch at Cookery in Dobbs Ferry. This didnt pair with the food I ordered at all but that s my fault for going for rate over appropriateness. Pours dark brown with thin head. Tastes ofntoasted malt, minerals, light cocoa, and wood. Kinda watery as well

This is a nice garnet red color w/ a fairly thick grey tan head of fine bubbles. It’s nose is actually a bit hop forward and roasty--almost reminds me of an American porter aside from the hop character is more spicy or earthy than citric. There is maybe a slight waft of skunk--this is bottled in the lighter brown glass you sometimes see on imports--but it dissipates quickly and does little too diminish the enjoyable aroma. Flavor too is pretty nice, dry and balanced and roasty--albeit w/ a hint of cardboard. This is almost a hit, I’d like to dry it in its native country and see if it isn’t great fresh.

500ml Tesco. Pours, erm, dark. Dirty-ish head soon fizzles out. A real oily taste. Not great.

Draught at the Haggerston. Dark brown with small golden head. Aroma is weird. Bit savoury, peppery. Maybe Worcestershire sauce? Taste is roasted malt, bit of chocolate. Not bad, but nothing too exciting.

Bottle. Malty smell, dark appearance with an off white head. The taste is very strange; mostly malty, very grainy and bready. Not that complex a beer either with a thin mouthfeel and little aftertaste but noticeably dry with low hop presence. Not very good but drinkable.

Bottle from Tesco. Apparently this is not available in Germany, I can see why. A very average Schwarzbier, far too malty and overcarbonated. Disappointing.

From Gene’s. Dark brown but not black beer. Some roasted aroma and flavor. Mineral flavor and aroma too. Decent stuff. Serving: Bottle
