(Bottle 33 cl) Typical pilsener golden, small white head. Very nice, flowery nose. Very, clear and pure malty flavours, with the perfect touch of hops in the finish. An archetypical example of a well-made. well-balanced pilsener. Thanks to Joris for the history lesson. 121197.

This beer needs some explication. First, "export". Export used to be a Belgian Pilsner-variety. Compared to a breweries' usual pils, export would be less attenuated, effectively sweeter, marginally less alcoholic, and traditionally 33cl compared to the 25cl Pilsener. In the seventies, breweries stopped bothering - as all pilsner-variations as Dort, Luxus, etc. became less well-percieved. Those breweries that still have export these days, just bottle pils in 33cl (best genuine example AFAIK, Rafexport from Contreras). Second, "Krüger". Krüger used to be thé regional brewer from Eeklo. It was a rather larger brewery, and as late as '72 major investments were made there. Then entered Piedboeuf, later Interbrew, and a dozen years ago, Krüger closed, demolished later, the beer all brewed at Jupille, and the name all but disppearing. But for the export Krüger beer, still very much in demand in the region - people being convinced it is weaker than the usual pils. Full clear gold, lively pearling to full white head, slowly collapsing leaving good lace. Very grainy nose, summer field, bit chaff. Rather bitterish onset, swinging immediately to full malt background. Very classical pilsener, finishes malt and grain adjunct. Light bodied, sort of beefed up. Watery aftertaste. Overall dreary. In the style of old export, though (4.8 % compared to 5.2% Jupiler).
