Harmony between taste and beauty - Dark beer is the traditional product of the Royal Brewery of Krušovice and for more than 100 years the production of this beer has not stopped. The beer has a full, sweet caramel taste and a light hop flavour. The high quality of the raw ingredients assures the excellent taste of the beer. There are several types of malt, natural spring water from the Křivoklát Wood and hops from the Žatec area.

0.5 l can. Pours dark brown body with quite thick light brown head. Nice aroma of coffee malt some caramel, too. Flavor is quite flat, too watery with coffee again. There is also notable bitterness, which shows up in quite bitter finish. Too thin generally, this beer is disappointing, although not bad.

Pours the darkest possible mahogany. Any more opaque and it would be black. That said, the body looks a little watery. A small, off-white, bubbly film is all that shows for a head. Tiny little spots of lacing dot the glass in a completely random pattern. The aroma is a bit muted, showing mostly coffee and faint chocolate malts. I didn’t really pick much else up in the nose, even on a deep inhale. The flavor is again quite bland, showing only weak coffee and faint chocolate. There is a mild hop bitterness as well, though not really enough to make it interesting. The mouthfeel is borderline thin, and at just 3.8% ABV this one goes down like water. Slightly bitter coffee finish. This beer is drinkable, but lackluster and disappointing.

Pours a dark brown color with an off-white head. Lighter on the aroma then most schwarzbier. Aroma is of roasted malts, chocolate, not much coffee if any, a little smokiness, caramel, and some nuttiness. Flavor wasn’t too strong either. Flavor was watery with a stronger smokiness then I was expecting, roasted malts, chocolate, caramel and a nutty finish. Lingering flavor dies pretty quick. Not really a good schwarzbier.

Bottle with a born on date of 28.06.2006. Medium sized fizzy tan head that mostly diminished with minimal lacing, transparent, visible carbonation, and a ruby hue. Nose was malty, nutty, caramel, burnt, and smokey notes. Flavor was malty, smokey, some caramel, and dry tasting. Fairly smooth and dry mouthfeel. Light-medium body. Didn’t set the world on fire for me as I still have a hard time acquiring a real taste for this beer style.

Pours a lovely deep, dark amber-brown with a small off-white head and nice lacing. Wonderful aroma with sweet malt and a slight note of buttered & blackened toast. The taste... oh my... this doesn’t really taste like beer - not even lager with a light roast. It tastes like molasses thinned-out and fermented on a bed of corn husks. The aftertaste is mercifully short-lived, and gives only the slightest indication of hops. Maybe I just don’t appreciate the finer points of a Schwartzbier, but I can’t seem to wrap my tastebuds around this one. Drainpour.
