(As ’Staroslav’ from Aldi). Fizzy gold with a shaving foam top. Pine cone that’s been vomited on, aloe vera, slight pear aroma. That papery, coniferous Krusovice taste; pine, licked stamps. Fenugreek?? Cream finish with metal and slight peardrop. Creamy mouthfeel, light bitterness and pine. Finished it.

Bottle. Yellow pilsener, not much different than any of the others floating around. Be czech and have it with breakfast.

500ml bottle as Staroslav. Clear yellow body, moderate carbonation, one finger, creamyish & mostly fading white head. Grain and a light, dry grassy hop aroma. Fruity, lemon sharpness on the tongue, cardboard and a fair lager hop bitterness. Quite dry with a bit of nuttiness. Light body, medium to full carbonation. Quite a decent length to the finish. Light, crisp and drinkable.

50 cl bottle, Aldi, Sheffield, UK. Sold as Staroslav Lager. Medium golden, nice bready aroma. Sweet with a mellow finish then a faint pepperiness. More body than I’d thought it would have, drinkable to be sure.

A rating back from 2008. Managed a bottle from an independent importer of Czech beers
Pours orange gold and translucent to a fine degree. Very lively, a burst of gas emerged once the cap came off the bottle, the beer clearly overcharged. Raises up an impressive white pad of foam that continues to build, lasts and laces well. Dull, bready, doughy malt on the nose. Good peppery hit overtakes. Big, grassy bitter sharpness hits the palate straight up. Sour malt and hops take over, a citric acidity with very low lying grain flavours not quite strong enough to balance. Finish is agreeably crisp, clean and very short. Pleasing level of carbonation, despite the appearance, to plus but very light in body. Not all too good with this one! Quack-Duck (5601) - Down South, GERMANY - OCT 20, 2010
bottle from albert Nové Butovice. Clear golden colour, large white head. Malty nose with hints of (cheap?) hops. Malty base, slightly hoppy with hints of cardboard. Not too bad.

Bottle (badged as Staroslav from Aldi). Smells faintly of sick and sawdust. Maybe sawdust on sick. Maybe it’s predicting how it will end-up at the end of the night. What a clever beer. It’s a pale copper golden beer with a fairly lasting frothy head. Flavours; well, the alcohol is detectable. Umm, there’s a bit of nettley hop going on and a touch of bread flavour. It’s not a particularly clean flavoured lager; it’s a bit odd; can’t say I’m a fan.
