COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An American example of an English style of beer made for the Russian Royals. This ale deep black in color, finally released after being aged for 16 months. Made using large amounts of malt and roasted barley yields the most robust beer we make. Thick coffee like flavor and aroma. This beer is well hopped and finishes bitter. This is a real treat

2012 from a trade a while back. Shared with ericteusink. Bittersweet coffee with an almost acidic coffee on the back end. Purple fruit plum and prune. Roasty malt aroma. Smooth up front and easy to drink. The finish is where all the flavor and fruit come in. Leaves a long bittersweet finish. Cocoa texture. Easy to drink and pretty entertaining.

2012 version thanks to Crajun. Ink black pour with a thin tan head into a snifter. Bold aroma of coffee, dark fruit, soy and booze. Huge coffee flavor with some caramel and burnt sugar. Slight hop bitterness on the finish. 9.25%abv nowhere to be found. A year plus in the bottle did this wonders! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

(Bottle, thanks Alex, you kick ass!) Pours black dark brown head. The aroma holds holds extreme, cowabunga-ish malt roast (bit like Expedition Stout) with black currant and black currant. Plenty of hops. The flavour is near medium sweet, medium to heavily bitter and and light acidic with deep roast, dark fruit and vibrant hops. The mouthfeel is round and light sticky with a light to medium carbonation. Smoky tar and hops on the finish.Near full bodied.

Bottle received in trade. Thank you rfraga7! 2012 vintage. Pours oily pitch black with a rather big frothy and creamy dark chocolate brown head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty, earthy and tiny fruity with heavily roasted malts, salty liquorice candy, burnt wood, burnt raisins, black currants, blackberries, caramel, soil, oatmeal cookies, resin, pine needles, alcohol, liquorice, bitter chocolate, dark roast coffee and grapefruit rinds. Taste is slightly sweet, heavy bitter and malty with heavily roasted malts, bitter chocolate, burnt wood, burnt caramel, blackberries, bilberries, burnt caramel, raisins, prunes, resin, salty liquorice candy, grapefruit rinds and dark roast coffee. Mouthfeel is soft, creamy, tiny roasted astringent, tiny boozy and full bodied. Finish is bitter and malty with heavily roasted malts, burnt caramel, burnt wood, bilberries, blackberries, oatmeal cookies, salty liquorice candy, soil and alcohol. Very nice smooth and heavy imperial stout…

Bottle @ Richard’s Tasting. Black in color with a tan head. Uck. Fusel, hot, solvent aroma. Roasted malt, coffee, caramel, and dark chocolate. Some green apple, too. Flavor is slightly sweet and syrupy with a lot of caramel and chocolate. Roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate/cocoa powder. Just way too boozy and hot.

2012 bottle, 12 ounces, poured into a kuhnhenn brandy snifter. Pours a thick, viscous black with the darkest head of foam I think I’ve ever seen. It’s almost a black head. Pretty good retention. The aroma has notes of thick molasses, raisin, cinnamon, fig, and licorice. Smells great. The taste has more of the dark, roasty sweetness like grilled figs and warm molasses. There’s a near bitterness that comes out toward the back end and warms the throat. Chewy mouthfeel. This beer is awesome!

UPDATED: OCT 30, 2014 Bottle: Thanks, Mike! Thick black, motor oil consistency with an impressively deep tan head; thin-bubbled, foamy, & quick to settle into a collar. Aroma is huge; thick baker’s chocolate, mildly roasted malt, light coffee bean char, & a hint of cream & brown sugar in the finish. Sweet without being cloying, roasty without being over-charred. Taste starts with nice bittersweet cocoa nibs, rich fudge, light bitterness & a heavier kilter towards creamy sweetness. Notes of mild anise & faint coffee bean in the finish, with a fudge cake & brown sugar aftertaste. Chocolate is definitely the supreme being, here. Nice, silky mouth feel. Great imperial stout.

Bottle, 2012 vintage 9.25% ABV. Aroma is full of rich dark chocolate, light roast and quite a bit of dark fruit. Cherry, plum and prune are most noticeable. Light tobacco and leather character. Pours black with a moderately small, thick, dark mocha head the recedes somewhat quickly to the edges. Flavor has a sweet, rich dark chocolate character. Medium roast with a bit of ash. Moderate leather and tobacco notes. Quite a bit of cherry, berry and plum fruit character. Some lingering leather, roast and chocolate. Medium bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. A touch of astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall a fairly good stout, especially if you like ones with a leather character. Nice balance of fruit to even out the leather and ash. Good complexity in the chocolate character. Not much hops which I suppose isn’t surprising considering its from 2012.
