Glouglouburp (2006), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jul 15, 2008 In short: A intense round and woody Imperial Stout. The best bourbon barrel imperial stout I’ve had.
How: From the keg at the brewery, not even on the menu but gratuitously offered to me by Bret, on of the brewer/owner. Thanks a lot buddy if you’re reading this, hope you enjoyed my little quebec treat.
The look: Black body with a few big bubbles acting as a head
In long: Nose is complex, not your usual bourbon-all-over-the-place fare. This one smells like molasses, wood, dark fruits, vanilla, earthy three roots and of course bourbon. Taste expands on the aroma and adds black chocolate, a lot of toffee, more vanilla, a strong roasted presence, burnt caramel, black liquorice, and probably more, I got tired of typing on my laptop and really wanted to savour the moment. Remarkably very little alcohol presence. Soft cask-like carbonation. Extra full body with a slight sticky mouthfeel. I couldn’t believe how easy to drink this monster was. IMHO this is one on the rare very successful integration of bourbon barrel in an extreme beer. This is what I was hoping the Dark Lord Oak Aged or Stone Bourbon RIS would be. One of the brewer/owner of the brewery went to the back and came back with that free treat for me because I looked like a beer geek (sitting by myself taking notes on my laptop and asking pointy questions). Once again proving the one true fact about acting like a beer geek: it may help get you beers but it will never help you get girls.
Mr_Stitch (138), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 11, 2008 Draft at Kuhnhenn’s. First I have to thank Eric for sharing this special treat with me. Three Floyds eat your heart out... if Kuhnhenn’s ever bottles this Dark Lord is done. Pours a deep dark brown/black with a thin brown head that disappears into a thin blanket and leaves slight lacing. Aroma is huge, oak, bourbon, earth, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, roasted malts, and coffee all playing a part in creating this wonderful smell. Taste is stunning to the taste buds, like a desert explosion in beer form using every one of the factors in the smell to create one of the most even and well crafted beers that I have ever in my 32 years of life had the honor of experiencing. Literally every thing that you could taste in the beer you could smell as well and none of it was overpowering to another part of it. I really wrestled with giving this beer a 5 but to be honest it deserves nothing less and will get nothing less from me. Simply put... Absolutely Brilliant. masonjer (452), Holt, Michigan, USA Mar 9, 2007 Had this at the winter beer fest, am just posting my rating now. big rich dark beer. Loads of bourbon, caramel, coffee, vanilla. super roasty and burnt, with alcohol at the end. Very good and strong. Would like to try this again. ogglethorp (801), Ohio, USA Feb 26, 2007 MI BG Winer Fest. Pours inky jet black with a minimal dark brown with golden highlights colored head. Aroma is exceptional, bourbon, roasted malts, coffee, toffee, caramel, vanilla, glade need to make an air freshener that smells like this! Flavor has all the same characteristics bourbon, roasted malts, coffee, toffee, caramel, vanilla, burnt sugar, alcohol. Palate is huge, mildly carbonated, sweet, sticky, creamy, smooth, a hint of alcohol warmth. The bomb!!! Easily can be spoken of in the same sentence as Speedway!! Yeah its that good!
