4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
2009 bottle. Rusty-brown colored pour with minimal head. Rich candied fig aroma with hints of plum, oak, vanilla, red grapes, red apples, and balanced bourbon. The flavor is candied fruit, rum raisin bread, a little spice, vanilla and a strong oaky finish with lots of booziness. This really drinks a nice mellow bourbon instead of an assertive barley wine. The body is full and velvety with low carbonation and a kick of alcohol warming after you swallow a sip. I wouldn’t really try to pair this with anything, but it make a great aperitif after a nice steak dinner.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20

2012 bottle. Deep brown with some haze and no head. Plum, sugar, caramel and booze. Holy wow. Just amazing. Completely hides the ABV. First 20 overall I've ever given.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
The color is a ruby caramel brown with a transparent tan edge. A small off-white cap leaves only an island after a few moments.
The aroma is sweet, deep, and complex. Bourbon, caramel, lots of vanilla, and oak.
The flavor unwraps slowly, bringing out new layers as it warms. Caramel, toffeet, and a bit of bready malt contribute to a sweet front. There is some oak and vanilla next. As the sip comes to a close, a bourbon presence really steps up and dominates. It causes some tingling of the tongue, burn in the back of the throat, and warming of the stomach. I can handle a strong bourbon presence, but this is almost over the top. It might get better with some significant age on it.
Other than that, this is a big-bodied barleywine, with enough booze and intensity to take on the strongest beer aficionado.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Had at the winter solstice last year. I had written down that it was actually brandy barrel but maybe it was aged in both. Poured a cloudy brown color with not much head at all to it. Aroma was a lot of bourbon/brandy and caramel maltiness. Flavor was real sweet and some alcohol showed. Lingered in the mouth.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
12oz. bottle, 2005 vintage, "Brewery Aged" noted on the label, with a big thanks to rbridges01 from over on BA for the chance to finally try this one! Pours a burgundy-caramel color with a moderate tan head that quickly diminishes to a thin ring with no lacing. Aroma is loaded with malty goodness - overripe dark fruits, toffee, caramel, oak, bourbon, vanilla, and brown sugar. Quite a heady nose that is very enjoyable to spend time with. Flavor is equally impressive, with a large variety of ripe and overripe dark fruits, caramel, toffee, and nicely complimentary barrel notes of oak, bourbon, vanilla and a hint of brown sugar sweetness. A nice lasting palate and some gentle warmth, but the ABV stays surprisingly well hidden. Well worth the wait and very glad for the chance to finally try. Thanks again Ron!

2010 bottle - now this bad boy will chase those winter nights away! Dark amber pour, slightly hazy. Malt, toffee and caramel strongly in the nose and taste. The bourbon is strong in this one.
