December 2005 batch #4 of Fourth Dementia that spent 6 months in a bourbon barrel.

Verre de dégustation, d’une bouteille, au Mondial 2011. Arômes de caramel brûlé, de chêne, de vanille et d’alcool fort. Robe brune aux reflets roux, légèrement trouble, légère dentelle et effervescence assez faible. En bouche, on retrouve beaucoup de caramel brûlé et de sucres résiduels, mais la bière n’est pas si ronde pour une création aussi forte. Le fût de chêne est très présent, apportant des notes vanillées. L’alcool est vraiment très présent. Longue finale alcoolisée présentant une forte amertume résineuse. La Fourth Dementia régulière est bien meilleure, à mon avis.

(12oz bottle, 2010 vintage) Pours a lightly hazy amber-brown body with a small beige head. Aroma of vanilla, roasted malt, oak, raisins, vinous, toffee, and caramel. Flavor of oak, toffee, vanilla, raisins, toasted coconut, caramel, light bourbon, and chocolate.

Pours a hazy murky brown with no head and no lace. There is intense aromas with vanilla, candied brown sugar, toffee, tart cherries, caramel, and chocolate. The aroma is very tell-tale that this was aged in bourbon barrels. Immediately, the beer is flat while being a bit hot and boozy. Loads of chocolate and caramel on the palate. The vanilla is also rather intense with some tart cherries, candied sugars, and charred oak. The finish is surprisingly short.

2010 bottle courtesy bu11zeye. Pours a murky orange color with very little carbonation. Aroma is sweet syrup, brown sugar, aged notes with wood and some touches of alcohol. Flavor is sweet syrup, maple wood, oak, bourbon, vanilla and dark malts. Some roast. Hot finish. Nicely done.

My Bottom Line:
Brash brown sugar, madeira and soy whip up an intense caramel of sorts which is neither tight nor all that pleasant to sip. An unrefined sugar explosion.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-There is no head of foam atop the brownish terracotta.
-Light smokiness adds complexity within the murky, sickly sweet body.
-Alcohol burn is actually welcome as it tends to cut through the overwhelming sensation of sweetness.
-The malt profile is poorly defined. Lots of flavors come from the grain bill, but most of them are in the form of residual sugars.
-Fruity edges come from the bourbon barrel.
-Just noticed this is Top 50 material here. Goodness gracious. Not for me, to say the least...

5000 (6300) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - JUN 8, 2011
Bottle:   Deep caramel, thin sudsy off-white head, spotty lacing.   Very nice nose of Bourbon, toasted marshmallows, caramel, and some dark pitted fruit.   This one smells complex and tasty!   Rich and smooth on the tongue.   Very malty.   Vanilla, caramel, bourbon, toasted marshmallow, and just one hell of a damn smores package that includes some dark pitted fruit.   This one is tasty!   So mellow, yet with some bite, smooth, nice rich maltiness.   Its warming, but for 11% its simply delicious!   Full bodied, rich creamy mouthfeel.   One of the smoother more full bodied beers I have had in a while.   Its like a nice cognac.   I wish I had several more of these to age.   Big thanks to Pailhead for getting me one of these!

Huge thanks to Hopstoopid for this one. Intense aroma of caramel, tobacco/ash, toffee and peat and bourbon. Taste is even better. Fine tawny port, caramel, "dulce de leche", bourbon heat. Real good. Palate is awesome, sirupy and mouthcoating.

Sampled at DLD, thanks for the share. Pour is a mahogany like colour, smell is of a kind of woody smell. Taste is very dry a bit of the bourbon comes through. Also some dark fruits in there. Interesting stuff. Glad I tried this one

2010 Bottle at tasting. Darker orange pour, with off-white head. Lots of chewy sweet malts, caramel, toffee, honey, raisin, woody, vanilla, and a bit earthy. Nice dessert beer.
