Tap at the Beer Temple, Amsterdam. Poured a clear medium amber with a thin broken white head. The aroma is yeast light malt. The flavour is light bitter with a light watery metallic hop bitter palate. Light bodied with soft carbonation. A bitter? No way. Itís more like a weak red ale. Cool it down and itís refreshing, but then again, so is water.

Had on-tap at the Kuhnhenn Brewery. My first of the style, so excuse my ignorance. Appearance: The picture on the menu made this look like it was brown... in person, it looks like a stout. This is basically pitch black. Thereís a two finger, frothy, tan head on this that just looked really good. An appetizing looking beer right at the drop. Smell: Stout/porter-esque. I had the Export Stout on this same visit, and as with the taste, this smelled like that with the ashy sort of aromas. The difference here is that this one maybe had a slightly sweeter smell with a bit more chocolate. Very nice. Taste: Low ABV, relatively low flavor and mouthfeel. That ashy flavor comes through pretty considerably in the flavor as well, but itís not overwhelming... nothing about this is. As mild as it may be, thatís probably how it SHOULD be, given the style name and the ABV. The feel is pretty watery thin, but this is an excellent sessionable dark beer, without a doubt. I know this is classified as an English Dark Mild Ale, but this really tastes like a porter to me -- which is not at all a bad thing. I heard that this tasted like "black water", and I donít think thatís too far off, even if itís under-explained. If I wanted to have a session at the brewery, this would likely be in the line-up. Not just that, but itís a reasonable price as well at $4.50 a pint. Try it out.
