3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap at kuhnhenn. Dark opaque brown pour, small white head. Tame aroma, subtle burnt toast notes. Taste is a bit watery, burnt toast. Milds are usually cool because they pack a lot of flavor in a low abv beer, this kne kind of misses that point. Still good though.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Had on-tap at the Kuhnhenn Brewery. My first of the style, so excuse my ignorance.
Appearance: The picture on the menu made this look like it was brown... in person, it looks like a stout. This is basically pitch black. Thereís a two finger, frothy, tan head on this that just looked really good. An appetizing looking beer right at the drop.
Smell: Stout/porter-esque. I had the Export Stout on this same visit, and as with the taste, this smelled like that with the ashy sort of aromas. The difference here is that this one maybe had a slightly sweeter smell with a bit more chocolate. Very nice.
Taste: Low ABV, relatively low flavor and mouthfeel. That ashy flavor comes through pretty considerably in the flavor as well, but itís not overwhelming... nothing about this is. As mild as it may be, thatís probably how it SHOULD be, given the style name and the ABV. The feel is pretty watery thin, but this is an excellent sessionable dark beer, without a doubt. I know this is classified as an English Dark Mild Ale, but this really tastes like a porter to me -- which is not at all a bad thing. I heard that this tasted like "black water", and I donít think thatís too far off, even if itís under-explained. If I wanted to have a session at the brewery, this would likely be in the line-up. Not just that, but itís a reasonable price as well at $4.50 a pint. Try it out.

From a growler.
Cola colored with one finger of white head. Tons of toffee/caramel on the nose. Toffee/caramel nutty taste. All malt with no hops noticeable. Very easy to drink session beer.

Poured up on tap at Kuhnhenn with mahogany body with copper hues and thin almost bright white head. The aroma has nice levels of dark roasted malts, burnt malts and some earthy malts. This smells inviting. The taste offers up a wealth of dark roasted malts, coffee notes and then a nice earthy note. This is coming across as a really rich mild.

On tap at the brewery. Interesting beer. Dark brown appearance, no head. Roasted malt and smoke in the aroma. Taste is roasted malts, smoke, some nuttiness. Very thin mouthfeel making it very drinkable. I pretty much slammed it. Not complex but still a very drinkable light beer with some flavor.

This growler is courtesy of my boss, who picked this up earlier this week.
This beer pours a light bodied cola brown in color with a one finger off white head that quickly turned to a lacing. The nose is almost pure toffee and definitely malty with no hop aromas or bitterness to speak of. Itís very soft and candy esque. The flavors are nice and somewhat roasty. Itís very malty with a touch of toffee and is an "off dry" with almost a brown ale type roast with just a hint of coffee. It has more flavor than youíd expect from the style. It is very, very light in body and overly sessionable. This is basically as easy drinking as it comes and has nice flavor as well. This is definitely one of the better representations of the style.

[4121-20111113] Tap. Light roasted coffee aroma has a bit of dry dusty grains. Clear, ruddy amber body with a medium-lasting creamy off-white head. Sweet roasted coffee notes in the flavour with a lot of toasted grain malt. Medium-full body. Good balance. (7/3/7/4/14) 3.5

On tap at Kuhnhenn. Pours hazy dark brown with light tan head. Aromas of dark malts, caramel, and chocolate. Flavors of choclate, caramel, and some roast. Pretty tasty mild IMO.
