Double Rice India Pale Ale. This gold colored West Coast style Double India Pale Ale has an intense hop nose, with aromas mainly of citrus. The high hop character dominates this IPA’s flavor pro-file. Made with American long grain rice, it is quite difficult to make but the rice con-tributes to this beer’s crisp aftertaste.

Draft pours hazy medium amber with a one-finger white head. The aroma is big on citrusy hops, with a caramel and slightly toasty malt base. Now I thought this was actually a double RYE IPA, not a double RICE IPA, and I must say I listed rye among my tasting notes. Palate fail I guess. Flavor is nice with sweet caramel malt, something I perceived as rye somehow, and citrusy and resinous hops. They say this one should be drier and crisper than a typical DIPA, but I didn’t get that. It was slightly syrupy and medium-full bodied, with low carbonation. Maybe the draft system was off somehow? Decent stuff overall though.

On draft in a pint glass at the pub. Typical amber color with just a bit of lacing. Big floral hop aroma. Big taste but very drinkable. The hops are the typical sharp citrus type. But some type of other sweet fruit is blended in. If I have any complaint it would be that it is a bit too sweet. The alcohol is very present. To sum it up I opted to take home a growler.

tap at Kuhnhenn - yellow body, thick foamy white head and nice lacing. grapefruit and citrus caramelly malts. pretty bitter and smooth spearmint candy, some mint. finishes dry. Whadd’ya know kids? Rice CAN taste good in beer!

Similar to the other Kuhnhenn beers, this "IPA" was more sweet than it should be. Not too many hops, weird syrupy sweetness in both taste and nose. Pass this up and opt for the misnomer that is the Lunie Kuhnie!

This beer had a very fruity nose, it reminded me of "PEZ" candy. The taste too was like PEZ. this beer claims to be a double IPA, but to me it was a very light regular IPA. Where’s the hops? This beer was ok.

UPDATED: DEC 11, 2010 Tap at the brewery. Golden/amber with frothy white head that dissipates. Aroma of citrus and grass, with biscuity sweet malt. Taste is bitter and lightly sweet. Lighter in mouthfeel than most DIPA’s, crisp and clean. Nice! Update 12/11/10: Got a 1/4 barrel for home - delicious mix of sweet caramel malt and grapefruit/mango hops. Smooth and delicious.
