7oz bottle-shared by jtc-aroma is leather, saddlesoap, berry. Taste is berry, some leather.

(187ml bottle from Epic Mead Tasting 2011, thanks in part to blutt59 and Mora2000) ruby/cherry with decent legs. Nose of earth, berry, funky, cherry, and musty books/cellar. Taste of honey, berry, a bit of alcohol, earth, and cherry. Medium dry finish, and balanced sweetness.

Thanks to blutt59 and thirdeye11 for going in with me on 16 Kuhnhenn meads. This was part of an epic 20 mead tasting. Pours a deep red wine color. The aroma is elderberries and red wine. The flavor is more complex. I get some elderberries as well as some vanilla, honey and red wine notes. Medium mouthfeel.

Bottle courtesy the great mead trade of 2011. (thirdeye11, blutt59, mora2000.) Pours a very pretty dark rouge color. Aroma is dry, and a bit musty. Maybe raisins in this? It’s hard to tell. Flavor matches the smell. Dry raisin notes, small fruity. Sweet and honey.

Sample at the brewpub. Pours a purple grape juice color with no head and decent legs. Berry aroma with some honey undertones. Rich body with an elderberry flavor along with notes of honey and some sweet spices. The finish is mildly tart and syrupy with a lingering elderberry aftertaste. Very good overall.

Bottle at James’ mead tasting. Pours a clear cherry cola color. Very interesting aromas, slightly dusty medicinal notes, spicy berry and ginger notes. Sweet candy and berry, dark elderberry flavors, reminds me of when I used to make elderberry and chamomile tea years back. Sweet and sticky, warming candy and dark dried berry.

Bottle thanks to FlandersNed. Pours grape color. Nose/taste of elderberry, honey, light ginger and cocoa. Some thyme in finish. Medium body.

Didn’t know what an elderberry was before trying this one, but here we go. Glass at Kuhnhenn on 7/23/11. Dark red/purple pour with no carbonation and light legs. Fruity aroma of ... well ... I guess elderberry along with honey and red wine notes. Big berry flavor along with grape, raisin and honey notes before a sweet finish. Truly fantastic. If you try this and like it, you have to try their elderberry tawny port.

Thanks to FlandersNed for this one in trade. Pours a deep and still purple/red. Beautiful color. Nose is all berries with hints of earth, raspberries, blueberries, cherries, and I imagine elderberries. Flavor is as nice as the color with all manner of dark berries and some barely detectable booze. Very nice all around.

pours a dark eggplant, sheeny, no head... the aroma is cherry cough syrup way too strong, a touch of flowers and spice, so medicinal its distracting... the taste a lighter version of cough syrup but still makes me almost want to hold my nose when I drink, not drinkable... fail
