3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Growler from New Beer. Brownish amber pour with gentle off-white lacing. Aroma has lots of whiskey that is balanced by caramel malt and brown sugar. Well, balance is attempted but not successful because that nose can sting! Flavor has a sweeter quality that is more successfully balanced: caramel malt, vanilla, wheat bread, and bourbon. Creamy body with a subtle whiskey sting. I like. Looks like I was fortunate to not get the batch from Hop Devil my NY compadres had the displeasure of drinking last month.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours dark red. Thin head and equally thin lacing. Aromas of dark fruits, bubblegum, with a slight whiff of alcohol vapor. Thin mouthfeel, moderate carbonation, incredibly sweet with a slightly bitter finish. Slightly vinous character, and Iím not getting any bourbon barrel character which makes me wonder if this is aged the same way as whatís described on the site here. The menu says this oneís clocking in at 15.5% ABV currently, and you wouldnít think it was any higher than 11% based on the taste. This is challenging stuff, but really good and unique.

Tap at Hop Devil. Poured a dark mahogany with no head. Nose is malty with a hint of a cedar closet. Thick and a bit syrupy. Malty with dark fruits and a load of sweetness. By no means cloying though and the abv is very well hidden. A nice sipper.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAY 5, 2010 Donít know what the last few raters of this were drinking, but it definitely wasnít the same thing. Small snifter via Kuhnhenn brewery, Pours a dark mahogany with medium tannish slight red head. Aroma of various dried and tart fruits, toasted malt, caramel, cane sugar, slight chocolate and molasses. and just a hint of bourbon. Flavor is no surprise but makes for a pleasant sipper. ABV definitely starts to sink in.

0.9 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 1/20
Draft. Pours a mild bruin body with an off white lacing. Aroma of uber sweet pears, bananaís, candied sugar tones. Just rancid, overtly sweet and disgusting. Sugar cane, rotten crab apples, plagued with overt sweetness an a massive warming. Horrid.

Tap at Hop Devil, new batch. Good lord, take cover! The depths of the suckitude of this beer are unfathomable. Smells like a burning tire, or perhaps a malt & meat smoothie. Tastes like the bottom of a New York City garbage bin. I would drink a sixer of 130 degree High Life before going near this again.

Shared bottle. Brownish pour with almost no head. Aromas of dark fruits and some bourbon. Flavors were similar with caramel, raisins, more alcohol, and wood. Pretty darn tasty.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
From a 6oz Bottle. Hazy, ruddy tobacco brown colored pour with a small, wispy head of off-white. Loads port wine characters saturate the aroma, dripping with fig, plum, and raisin fruits. Somewhat boozy with a pleasant vanilla undertone. Medium full bodied, lightly carbonated mouthfeel with a sweet, but not overly sticky texture - certainly appropriate for the ABV. Lots of sweet dark fruit flavors, port wine, and spicy fig. A layer of caramel melanoidins suggests a richness in malt was once there, but seems to have thinned with oxidation. Grape skin tannins and some hot alcohol adds some coarseness in the finish. Sticky and wine-like with a pleasant fruitiness, but the tannins and alcohol detract from the flavor. The nose on this beer was quite amazing, especially with the soft fruitiness contributed by the oxidation. The finish however, wasnít nearly as spectacular, the weathering effects of the oxygen scrubbing away some of the malt complexity and leaving behind some of the harsher qualities. Thanks for sharing, Chris!

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A- Pours a ruddy brown hue with little to no head. Doesnít seem to be very much carbonation left.
S- I could smell this from the moment the cap came off! Huge raisin, plum, fig smell followed by a stinging alcohol. It reminds me of sam adams triple bock in a good way.
T- Taste was very dark fruit, lots of plum and fig like in the nose, very sweet in the end and fades into alcohol. It warms as it goes down. Theres a very distinct sweet tartness that hits hard in the begining and lingers at the end that I canít quite put my finger on. Definitely tastes nowhere near 17 percent.
M- Thick with very little carbonation. Works well for the style.
D- My overall impression? This was by far the most experimental and extreme brew iíve tried by Kuhnhenn and I think they pulled it off nicely. I couldnít see myself coming back to this one much if I had the chance but I loved trying it. This brewery definitely pushes the limit.
