bitbucket (2024), Kirkland, Washington, USA Oct 28, 2009 Bottle. Pours dark brown. Sweet brown sugar and wood nose. Full body, light carbonation. Deep, complex flavors of brown sugar, caramel, oranges, plums. This is amazing stuff. shawnm213 (841), South Bend, Indiana, USA Oct 18, 2009 BIG thanks to BBB63 for this sought after bottle. Thanks Mike! Served in a great lakes christmas ale snifter. Pours a muddy murky brown with practically no head. Great legs. Aroma of caramel, sherry oxidation, dates, plums, a little booze. Very nice. Flavor is candy, brown sugar, toffee, sweet, but not cloying. Enough complexity that the sweetness is not a distraction. Very smooth, rich, complex beer. AWesome! nickd717 (1265), Palo Alto, California, USA Oct 7, 2009 Sampled several times over at GABF 2009. Kept going back while waiting in the New Glarus line. Hazy dark reddish-amber color with a lasting white head. Aroma is sweet caramel malt, brown sugar, earth, dark fruit, and hops. Flavor is also on the sweet side but incredibly good, with lots of caramel malt and toffee, red berries, maple syrup, spices, chocolate, and just a touch of alcohol, well hidden for 11%. Palate is smooth, fairly full and warming, with soft carbonation. This is a great beer. elihapa (1028), Honolulu, California, USA Oct 4, 2009 GABF Saturday, tasted twice. Upfront, this beer reminded me of Old Inventory by Valley brewing, aged for a year or two. Pouring dark ruby, this beer is an attractive array of rich red fruit, sweet caramel, minerally soil, and firm malt. It is incredibly balanced, which I believe is its biggest asset. The alcohol is also hidden quite admirably. The flavors are bold and tasty, and successfully display a strong malt profile without bearing too much sweetness. Great beer overall. illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Oct 1, 2009 GABF 2009. Pours a dark murky amber with a retentive ivory head. Great aroma of fruity esters, rich caramelly malts, vanilla. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Flavor of caramel, vanilla, masple, seeping grains/wort- all countered by a moderate herbal bitterness. Decent amount of residual sweetness, but not overdone. Great beer. I like this because it has a homebrew characteristic to it. DaSilky1 (1924), San Diego, California, USA Sep 27, 2009 GABF 2009: Hazed dark amber with spotty halo of a head. Aged malt nose with nice oxidation and added notes of mildew and sweet candy. Flavors show sweet candy malts with aged sophistication...maybe a bit too sweet for my tastes, but still good regardless. tastybeer (33), Washington DC, USA Sep 24, 2009 Shared with tarheels. Pours dark with thick head and lots of lacing. Tastes very sweet and alcohol with maple, brown sugar, toffee, chocolate. Very flavorful but the alcohol shines through, leaves a nice sweet aftertaste. tarheels86 (700), Washington DC, USA Sep 24, 2009 355 mL 2008 version courtesy of Glouglouburp. Pours a very dark, cloudy, muddy red with a two-three finger yellow head. Great retention. Leaves spots of sticky lacing. Aroma is awesome: lots of spicy alcohol, bourbon, rich toffee, peanut brittle, raw cane sugar, maple and brown sugar oatmeal, gingerbread, cinnamon schnapps. Just an incredibly rich, sweet, boozy nose. Wow. Taste is super sweet: tons of maple syrup, brown sugar, toffee, peanut butter, chocolate. But there is so much cloying and the sweetness is a bit much- verging on medicinal. Leaves a sort of medicinal flavor on the palate. 11% is fairly well hidden.
