Aroma of sweet malt with some dry fruit characteristics. Taste is also dominated by sweet malt notes with some dry fruits (plums, figs). Full body with limited filtration and some low carbonation. No alcohol was discernable which is quiet a feta considering the ABV in this beer. Not as complex as I was expecting but very good nonetheless; a great late night sipper for sure. vyvvy (2069), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | May 1, 2008 Rating #1500. On tap at Hop Devil Grill in NYC. Pousr dark hazy bronze with a persistent dense tan head. The aroma has black current, huge creaminess, caramel, toffee, and milk chocolate. The aroma is beautiful and thick. By the big rich flavors you know the alcohol as to be big, but the alcohol itself is not detected at all. The body is thick and velvety with gentle soft carbonation. The flavor starts with toffee and caramel that is light and smooth on the tongue while being thick in the taste. There are also dark fruit notes detected. Some bitterness is on the finish, but still incredibly somooth and silky tasting. This is an excellent beer that must have some age on it to come across this mellow, drinkable and big all at the same time for an 11% beer. Excellent. MoritzF (5130), Bochum, Germany

Slightly yeasty, sweet and molassy, strong dark malty aroma, subtle fruity (dried fruits) with earthy notes, caramel and liquorice. Sweet flavour, full bodied and soft on carbon. Dark malty taste, slightly fruity with caramel, liquorice and cacao; sweet and long finish with distinctive notes of chocolate/cacao and a warming alcohol presence. Lingering and very tasty brew (23.04.08). DicksMcGee (54), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Apr 24, 2008 Dark amber brownish pour with small tan head. Smells of resin, fruits and some smoke. Taste of very dark fruits balanced with some chocolate and a very inoffensive smokiness. Like other kuhnhenns I’ve had, a wonderful mouthfeel. Perfect example of what an old ale should be. | 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 20, 2008 A- Pours a deep scarlet hue carrying a small coffee head.
S- The smell is amazing and I know i’m going to blow it on the description but i’m going to try anyway. Sweet bready malt up front followed by an intoxicating dark fruit armoa, figs, possibly hints of plum which lead into a subtle hop afterthought.
T- The taste seems to be the inverse of the smell, some hops up front followed by a gentle wave of dark fruit which sweeps the palate and carries an alcohol warming with it. After that wave ebbs, a hop bitterness lingers. I am definitely going to get my hands on another one and let it age for a year or two. By far the best old ale i’ve ever experienced.
M- Thick with an ample amount of carbonation for the style.
D- This was such a delight to drink it is almost indescribable. I definitely would not be in the mood for this all the time but on a cold winter night I can think of nothing better.

Nose is incredibly rich, with sweetness from summer fruits and caramel. The flavor is a bit more mellow and a touch earthy. I was actually glad, because I was afraid this would be a sticky, gooey, saccharine ridden sugar fest, even for my sweet tooth! It did have apricot and raisin influences, along with some brown sugar and molasses. A bit of a creamy mouthfeel and slight bitter, earthy finish. bdigital (593), Ft Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Apr 14, 2008 Bottle: Pours a dark mahogany color with a medium-dark cream head...followed by this badass looking, wispy halo. Nose hints at oak, sweet caramel, dark roasted malts, raisins and figs. The complexity of this is amazing. Flavor has notes of dark malts, dark fruit and some wood-infused chocolate. Unbelievable brew. ISO: MORE! dkachur (2445), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA

The taste is subtle bitterness with heavy molasses and dark fruits. The feel is creamy and chewy. I like.
