Nose is strong malts, a little roasty, a good portion of caramelized sugar, and a little cocoa. Flavor is a bit overwhelming with strong flavors throughout of sweet sugary malts, roasted malts, molasses, and some booze in the finish. This was about the 10th beer of our tasting and after sipping this one I started buzzing really nicely. I liiiiike... WeeHeavySD (3044), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA

Pours a caramel brown with a small white head. Smells like big malts, a little heat, slight caramel, a little soapiness, but its an old ale and they kind of have that character. Taste has big malts, with a touch of sourness and some caramel. A little bit sweet, with a bitter finish. Some molasses and raisins also are detectable in the taste. Pretty good. cbkschubert (2030), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA

Light spotty lacing. Aroma is dark esters and toasted malt. Flavor is much off the same with just enough bitterness for balance. Medium to full body. Alcohol is only slightly noticeable. A very good beer. Thanks Kevin. 00cobraR (1103), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA

Pours out a dark brown color with a nice beige head. Aroma is very sweet with nice choco notes with maybe some fruit. Flavor was sweet with not one bit of hops to it. Had a nice warming to it as it coats the throat. Great brew! ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 18, 2007 2004 Bottle that I got god knows when from a trade with Len (MrManning) Thanks. I have had this for a long time, probably almost a year. Pours out a dark brown color with a thick tan head on it. Smell is sweet, some hints of chocolate, roasted malts, and some sweetness. Taste is smooth and rich, full of dark fruits, malts, and sweet. Perhaps a little too sweet, but still very good. Hops had all but completely faded out of this one. Good stuff, wish I had more, and I would love to pair this with a cigar. Thanks for the bottle Len. JoeMcPhee (5056), Jackson Heights, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 24, 2007 Tap at Spuyten Duyvil. Deep brown/ruby beer with almost no head to speak of. Very still appearance. Sweet grapey/vineous aroma. Plums/figs/dates. Soft sweet chocolate and a touch of leathery character as well. There is a touch of saltiness in the nose as well. Warming brings out loads of intensely sweet malts. Flavour is very sweet with dark chewy malts, licorice, dried fruits (raisins/dates/plums) as well as some herbal/spicy hops throughout. Intensely sweet and alcoholic and the sweetness tends to get cloying after awhile. A kiss of smoke on the back of the palate. Chewy palate, peppery alcohol and lots of dried fruit make this an appealing brew, but it’s a bit too sweet for me. Still, with it being as cold as it is outside, this makes my belly warm. drewbeerme (2316), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 13, 2007 Updated: May 12, 200812oz bottle, brewed on 2/16/05, almost its’ 2 year anniversary. Sampled next to Bourbon Barrel Fourth Dementia. Poured deep mahogany with reddish hue and a small tan head around the rim. Nose is lovely, candied dark fruits, plums, currants, brown sugar, bread, chocolate and caramel covered raspberries. The nose seems a little to yeasty which detracts from the notes. Flavor notes has some really nice caramel, dark fruits, raspberries, with a hint of dark chocolate. Only complaint in the flavor is that although it tastes wonderful, the notes don’t seem balanced perfectly. Maybe more age will help. Not overly sweet at all. Alcohol is noticed but hidden well. Mouthfeel is rich and smooth. Carbination is low and body is medium. Kuhnhenn has really got something special here. I preferred this over the BA version.4.2.
5/12/08, bottled 2/16/05 making it 3 years and 3 months old. pours brown with creamy tan head. aroma is pretty oxidized, vegetal, sherry, caramel, tobacco. flavors are sweet and oxidized, caramelized dark fruit, sherry, and vegetal. very smooth brew. the oxidized notes reallly smoothed out once it breathed. wow really tasty and easy drinking. although i’m not sure this really got better and it would probably get too oxidized with much more age.4.1.
