Darkish brown, soft haze hue. Nose is huge over bitter/sour rich nose. Impressive but a little bubble of infection through things. Light brown sugar. Stewed unvined dark berry - odd but decent.
Dense bitter berry, rich and off but it does work it’s way in. Like a nice veg stock, turns itself in. Fairly bitter and acrhid on the finish, but I can go easy for it’s age - soured but not ruinously.
Bottle, thanks CAGarvietron, November Tasting.

Flaska från 2011. Klent pys. Brun kulör med lite lösa partiklar. Doften påminner väldigt mycket om lagrad engelsk barleywine, typ Thomas Hardys. Torkad frukt, kavring, fenoler, diesel, lite komplex. Ingen fudgekola.
Mäktig smak som domineras av choklad. Blindprovad hade jag lätt gissat på över 10 år gammal, kanske 20 år. Komplex, häftig och tung.

Deep brown nearly still beer. Aroma of nutty malt, vanilla, fruity raisins, caramel. Taste is very smooth toffee, vanilla, dried fruits. Unfortunately I tried this alongside the BA version, but this USA delicious beast.

12 oz. bottle, 2011 edition. 13.5%, so that made me think it’s the Barrel aged version, but I didn’t taste any wood and there’s no mention of it on the label (only: 4th D is aged for a minimum of nine months before being released), so I’m assuming it’s this one.
Very dark color, almost opaque. No head to speak of. Aroma’s: dried fruits, raisins, soy sauce (shoyu/umami), somewhat alcoholic retronasal. Flavor is moderate sweet, dried fruits, upcoming bitterness. Alcohol is warming. Pretty full bodied, thick mouthfeel. Long finish, slightly bitter, a bit roasted, syruppy. Complex and delicious.

2011 batch thanks to a trader. Pours a deep reddish brown. Not much carbonation left so no head. Aroma of caramel and brown sugar. Some dark fruits. Tastes more of raisins and dates with some caramel. Thick and syrupy.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Had on tap at the Kuhnhenn Brewery as part of a paddle. ’11 Vintage.
Appearance: Somewhat like the BB4D, but with a more reddish hue, and -- surprisingly -- a somewhat smaller head. Given the ABV, this is actually a great looking beer. There’s even a little bit of lacing, too.
Smell: Sweet. The BB4D has a chocolate note, and I suppose this has a trace of it as well, but it’s less pronounced. This regular 4D has a fruitier aroma, and there’s no alcohol in that aroma at all.
Taste: Like the smell, sweet... cherry sort of aromas here, with plenty of malt. There’s a decent bitterness in there so it’s not all fruity sweetness, but it’s definitely a sweeter brew. Dark fruits and malts own this beer. A bit of warmth on the swallow lets you know that this is a high ABV beer, but it doesn’t come through in the taste. I like the aroma on this one a bit more than the BB4D version.
I’m no doubt in the minority, but I prefer this one to the bourbon barrel version. It’s not by a huge margin, but it’s still there. The bourbon barrel may mellow the beer out a tad, but it also takes away notes that this ’11 4D had... and that I really enjoyed. This 4D had an inexplicable certain "bite" in the flavor (and I don’t mean alcohol) that really intrigued me. This is an excellent beer that must be tried if it can be found.
