Deep ruby red ale. Extreme malty/caramel flavor; sweet up front, finishing with hop bitterness and aroma. Very complex beer. We recommend at least four more months of age. But it is a delight to drink now.
Batch 1 - brewed late 2003, draught only.
Batch 2 - brewed 8/1/2004
Batch 3 - brewed 2/16/2005
Batch 4 - brewed end of Dec. 2005 (part of this batch was bourbon-aged)

On tap at Kuhnhenn. Pours a deep amber with a creamy off-white head. Aroma of dried fruit, caramel, and alcohol. Taste is very similar with a slight sweetness and roasted malt for balance. Mouthfeel is dry and malty. Looking forward to a vertical on this one!

Bottle from LCBO many moons ago. Bottled in 2012. Deep reddish brown. Not much of a head. Superb strong aroma of caramel and toffee and toasted marshmallow. Caramel and toffee flavours, with some lingering toasted marshmallow and a hint of oak. Reminds me of Thomas Hardy barleywine. Fantastic stuff.

Shared 0.355l bottle @ Rossí flat in NYC . 2010 model. Itís a really deep dark brown looking one this. Near what Iíll call murky, still good looking and on the top thereís a sidesticking off-white head - small lacings. Smells of dark licorice, sweet raisins and wood. Really good stuff. Just below average on the prickling carbonation level and it has a thick oily texture in the mouth. Much the same in the taste: Raisins and rum. I get wood, sweet caramel and itís also a little salty. Superb stuff. nothing more to say. 19.06.2015

355ml bottle enjoyed @ home, thanks to BenH! Pours murky brown with little to no head. Aroma is caramel, vanilla, earthy, dark dried fruits and brown sugar. Taste is heavy sweetness and light+ bitterness. Full bodied, creamy-ish texture, very soft texture. Finish is sweet, almost cloyingly and vinous.

Bottle. Deep reddish-brown pour, murky, with a small head. Aroma is quite sweet, caramel and raisin, some berry notes, slightly bready. Taste is sweet up front, lots of berry notes and raisin, really flavourful and fruity. Finishes with a slight bitterness to balance and manages to not be too cloying despite a thick, oily texture and a lot of sweetness. Some coffee in the aftertaste. Amazing for the style, complex and really delicious brew.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with small beige head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is caramel, roast, vanilla. Thick mouth, strong dark fruit, toffee, vanilla, light roast, nice booze finish, really enjoyed this.

Bottle from a trade. Poured into a snifter at home. Almost no head and no lacing. The aroma is BIG caramel, toffee, brown sugar, cookie dough, sugar plums, prunes, raisins. Taste is big cookie sweetness dark overripe fruits, brown sugar, toffee, caramel, and dark candies. Mild barrel aging and barrel flavors. Thick and chewy. Is it supposed to have ZERO carb? Some old ales have some. This one is flat as a pancake. Overall flavors are delicious.
