COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep ruby red ale. Extreme malty/caramel flavor; sweet up front, finishing with hop bitterness and aroma. Very complex beer. We recommend at least four more months of age. But it is a delight to drink now.
Batch 1 - brewed late 2003, draught only.
Batch 2 - brewed 8/1/2004
Batch 3 - brewed 2/16/2005
Batch 4 - brewed end of Dec. 2005 (part of this batch was bourbon-aged)

On tap at Kuhnhenn. Pours a deep amber with a creamy off-white head. Aroma of dried fruit, caramel, and alcohol. Taste is very similar with a slight sweetness and roasted malt for balance. Mouthfeel is dry and malty. Looking forward to a vertical on this one!

12oz bottle in a tulip. Pours cloudy brown with a beige head. Aroma of a lot of sweet malts, light vanilla, some weird savory notes, and light hops. Flavor about the same. Smooth texture. A good beer, but a little overwhelming (side by side with the barrel-aged version, it can’t compare).

355 ml bottle, 13.5% ABV. Pours a dark copper, small caramel head with poor retention, no lacing. Aroma is sweet and fresh: tons of caramel, licorice, dates, raisins, floral, alcohol. Taste is very sweet and smooth: caramel, spices, raisins, dates, licorice. Almost flat, some hops bitterness in the aftertaste.

Cold bottle. 2011 bottle. Pours dark, no head. Smells sour and vinegary. Taste is liqouricey and sweet. Slight coffee and a fair bit of soy sauce. Mid to full body. Alcohol not detectable. Very similar to J W Lees Harvest Ale 2001 but less intense and 10 years younger. Impressive that the same qualities have been put into a much younger beer. Not bad but not a beer I’d want often. Good quality and interesting rather than tasty and satisfying. JWLees 2001 is a better beer, but this is a good alternative.

2012 edition (13.5% ABV) with a best before date 2017/01/01. Pours a copper-ruby colour with a small beige head that goes down slower than expected and slim creamy lace. The nose is loaded with dark fruits; prunes, dates, raisins, plums. Also, rich sweet malts with hints of nuts. Full-bodied with the alcohol very well-hidden. Again, the taste is pretty loaded with the same found in the aromas. Notes of toffee, apples, licorice, spices are also found. A very complex, nice warming brew that is packed with flavours and smell.

12oz bottle, shared by Jason. Thanks! Pours a deep, dark brown color with a thin tan head. Aroma is dark fruit, raisin, a little smokey. A little heavy on the palate with soft carbonation. Flavor is sweet, malty, smokey, raisin, leather, nutty, with a sweet, malty finish. Very nice. Reminiscent of Adam.

Bottle from mikem409. Pours a dark opaque brown with almost no head. Aroma is very sweet, malty, lots of raisins and dark fruits, caramel, a little alcohol. Taste is heavy sweet with some surprising bitterness. Finish is sweet, lightly bitter. Full bodied, super smooth and buttery. Really good.

(Thanks Josh!)
