On tap at Kuhnhenn. Pours a deep amber with a creamy off-white head. Aroma of dried fruit, caramel, and alcohol. Taste is very similar with a slight sweetness and roasted malt for balance. Mouthfeel is dry and malty. Looking forward to a vertical on this one!

Bottle. Vintage 2011. Murky deep brown liquid with small tan head. Aroma of chocolate, raw sugar, port wine, raisins, sweet alcohol, toffee and pumpernickel. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter with notes of raw sugar, toffee, dried fruit and caramel. Full bodied with low to medium carbonation and sticky mouthfeel. Really nice.

Bottle at home, 2012 vintage, from an IP trade in London 12/04/14. Opaque dark mahogany brown with a moderate light tan swirl and edgeing. Nose is light cocoa, Christmas cake, tobacco, leather sofa, dark fruit rind, toffee fudge, light booze notes. Taste comprises candied fruit peel, fruit loaf, raisens, dates, prunes, sherry tones, dark toffee fudge. Full bodied, fine carbonation, oily mouthfeel, sweet notes in the close. Solid solid stuff, the alcohol is evident but well integrated, a sumptous after dinner affair !

12 oz bottle, thanks to Al. Pours opaque dark brown with khaki head, great retention. Aroma: higher alcohols to start; toffee, dark fruit, cola (lots of cola, actually), caramel, maybe even a hint of blueberry. Taste: rather sweet. Waves of fruit, caramel, some chocolate, just a hint of acidity, some well-placed oxidation, raisins, vanilla. Quite complex. Finishes with a minimal (but non-zero) amount of bitterness. Grapes. Palate: full body, soft carbonation, slick syrupy texture. Overall: delicious. Love this.

2012 12 ounce bottle Poured into a Kuhnhenn brandy snifter. Pours a murky mahogany with a thin khaki colored head of foam that dissipates down to a film and a ring of foam around the perimeter of the glass. The aroma is raisin predominantly, but then thereís layers of wood, vanilla, toasted pecans, praline. The taste is definitely on the sweet end of the spectrum. The sweetness starts to fade to a bit of alcohol warmth as the swallow settles on the tongue. Thereís a bit of earthiness coming through as the beer warms. Some dried grass or straw. Iím getting a lot of prune or fig newton flavors now. Iím leaning more toward fig. Itís not just the fig Iím getting either, thereís definitely a bit of cookie crumb, like the outside part of a fig newton. The mouthfeel is thick, sticky, and just a little prickly. The carbonation is low on this, but it is just enough to give the mouthfeel a little tickle of life. 2 years on this beer certainly did no harm. Iíd be curious to try it fresh, though. Overall this is one delicious beer.

HMOG 2014. 2009 ed. Always nice to try a top beer in a style that has been around and vetted hundreds of times over. Age did not stop this from being awesome. Would like to try fresh, but this was real nice. Big ripe fruits, figgy, caramel, and the booze has pretty much gone, leather. Real nice.

HMOG 2014. Had the barrel aged variant of this beer earlier in the year. Glad I was able to get the standard version. Grainy candy scent. Pours darkest brown with tan head. Starts sweet and bites on the end, but in a non-hoppy way. Bottle - Shared at HMOG

Red/brown pour no head. Aromas of dark fruits, molasses, and caramel. Flavor is super sweet all the way through. I donít get much hop character on this one at all. Just very very sweet. Tasty brew, a but too sugary but still tasty.

Deep brown, no head. Smells like oak and molasses and soy sauce. Smooth, rich palate. Flavor is pretty much the same, but maybe a bit more soy sauce. Perhaps a bit...salty? Weird...

Powerful and different. Apparently, the 2013 version has 13.5% alcohol. The aroma was strong with malts, hops and some wood. It had an antiseptic hint to it. Old ales are always a throw of the dice since they donít necessarily follow any style points. The palate was smooth and oily with low carbonation. It had a murky copper-brown color. It tasted sweet and somewhat boozy with a dry hop finish. It was good and unique but by far not my favorite from this brewery.
