3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Tap @ Kuhnhenn: Very dark brown, close to black with a small, light-tan head sifting across the top. Aroma contains weedy, grassy hops, faint roasted malts, light citrus peel, dry cocoa powder, & some modest floral notes. Flavor doesn’t pack the punch of the aroma, seems somewhat thin & watery at first. Notes of wet grass, weeds, & pine. Roasted malts are in the periphery, but a little more modest than they were on the nose. Back-end finishes with bitter florals, grapefruit rind, a hint of roasted cocoa beans, & a slight touch of saltiness. Thin body. Not bad for Kuhnhenn’s first(?) black IPA, but it needs more body, robustness, & dark malt counterpoints.

Should this be a black ipa? It certainly isnt pale. Dark brown, near black. Medium consistency, high carbonation. Some hops in smell, leave is bitter and a little sour. Tap at brewpub.

UPDATED: DEC 22, 2012 Great aroma, terrific roast and citrus hops. Taste does not live up to the taste, being rather watered roastiness and hops. Tired. But Lace lines. Decent drinkability, enjoyed on tap at the brewpub.

At the brewery, dark brown with an off white head. Hoppy and chocolatey with some nice citrus notes. Hoppiness is more prevalent in the flavor than the nose. Pretty good.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sample draft at the brewery. Pours a very dark brown color with a 1 cm head that lingers a bit. Aroma is chocolate, caramel, citrus, and orange peel. Taste is seems more hoppy than the aroma. Spicy and citrus hops hit at first but it turns a bit chocolatey by the finish. Light bitterness. Mouthfeel is a bit thin and watery but not too bad. Love the taste but I wish it had a thicker body.
