4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 adnielsen (6537) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - MAY 20, 2013
Bottle @ home via trade with deyholla, I believe. Thanks! Pours a bit murky black appearance with a dark brown head. Chewy herbal yeasty, dark chocolate, somewhat spicy, minty/piney aroma that really has the house character of the Kuhnhenn yeast. Tangy, orange zesty, fairly citrusy, Belgian chocolate, chewy yeasty, minty, light toffee flavor. Honesty, this tastes pretty strong but is super smooth for the 11% abv. Also, pretty unbelievable that this has held up so well. I’ve had this bottle for near a year and god knows how long deyholla had it before me, but it’s still super tasty.

[4940-20121116] 355mL bottle. Light orange hops has a smoky soya sauce note in the aroma. Hazy, dark brown body with a quick foamy tan head. More floral malt and smoky soya and bitter burnt citrus peel in the flavour. Medium-full body. Bit of a surprise sneak-attack tastiness. (8/3/8/3/16) 3.8

20th February 2011 Opaque black beer, small tan head. Milky malt and a little sourness on the nose. Light palate, mild carbonation, slightly dry. Sweet and light dark malt. Aniseed, coca cola and a little chocolate. Some yeast. All joins up seamlessly in to quite a unique beer. Tasty dark treat!

2012-11-16. Dark brown body with a nice tan head. First smell of ethanol blows off, sweet fruity malt, alcohol. Flavour is similar, sweet malt, sugar, herbal character, warming alcohol. 7+ Smooth average plus to medium bodied palate. Pretty decent, but just a bit too boozy for my preference. Bottle, note on cap says 12/2011 via trade with flandersned

Deep brown pour with a fast-fading head. The aroma is sort of sweet and spicy. A sort of black licorice character and a touch of a minty character as well. A leathery sort of character as well. A little bit of soft character and some decent earthiness. Cocoa and some earthy bitterness. A lovely brew actually. A little bit of peppery ethanol up front but it fades quickly.

3.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 JAXSON (484) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 11, 2012
I assumed this was an imperial stout the whole time it was sitting in my basement. Nose is cocoa powder, red berries, sweet vanilla, maybe a touch mushroomy. Mouth thankfully adds a hefty bitter quality to balance all the enormous sweet flavors. Actually pretty interesting mouth, sweet chocolate ad vanilla with bright hops, but that nose just lingers. Interesting. I probably should have opened this a few months ago, but still decent.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 KickInChalice (849) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 1, 2012
From notes. First reviewed 1/12/2011. Served on tap at Kuhnhenn in a tulip.
The appearance is mahogany all of the way through. A cream foam tan head stays with the beer for a minute, but fades to mostly a ring.
Coffee, dark roasted malt, lots of herbal hops and pine resin, then more grapefruit and apricot citrus create the aroma. Definitely some hop presence here.
The taste starts very sweet. Some molasses that were hidden from the aroma, and some cane sugar. Roasted malt and coffee provide the malt backbone. A bit of chocolate and then the taste suddenly changes and picks up some pine resin hoppiness, gaining steam and eventually revealing some grapefruit and apricot citrus as well. Finishes paradoxically sweet and bitter.
There is a strong full body, sticky, with medium carbonation. A combination of the hops, alcohol, and carbonation leaves my tongue tingling.
This is a little bit out there, but I enjoyed it. The sweetness will really prevent me from having more than one though.

Bottle poured a clear reddish brown with a small lingering brown head. Aromas of molasses, preune, toffee, earthiness and sherry. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth with a warming finish. Flavors of toffee, earthiness, prune, sherry and tobacco with a smooth warming lingering tobacco finish.
