12 oz. bottle shared with the group. Pours a dark brown color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma has earthy, resiny and citrus hops, roasted malts, chocolate and some alcohol. The flavor has a big dose of pine resin, roasted malts, chocolate, fruits and raisins. The alcohol is warming, but not part of the flavor. Call this what you want; black ipa, DIPA, American barley wine, I enjoyed this one. Extra marks because it wasn’t infected.

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Deep garnet red-brown body, medium clumping light brown head. Nose of cocoa, berries, and piny hops. Rindy, oily body with spruce, fruity esters, and spice; quite sweet with notes of chocolate. Weird, but pretty good.

12oz bottle. Pours a very viscous motor oil black with a creamy tan head. Big nose of roasted malt, chocolate and pine needles. Very heavy on the palate, big roasty character, really coats the mouth.

Dark Amber pour with a thin off white head. Aroma is resinous, tropical fruit and strawberry. Bitter while being balanced. Lots of tropical fruit, pine and grapefruit. Little yeast

Aroma is Chocolate, fruit, earthy. The appearance is black brown. The flavor is chocolate, sweet, earthy. Medium, slightly thick in body. The Finish is resiny hops. Good. Decent example of the style, even if it is more sweet than hoppy.

Similar to a strong ale...ala 9000, albeit hugely dumbed down, and better because of it. Has the fruity esters, anise, clove and spice to accompany the highly resinous hop profile. Tho this may be "dumbed down" like I mentioned, it still becomes cloying and hard to finish.

Bottle from Flandersned. Pours a deep auburn, brown with a low tan head. Roasty, licorice, raisin and slight bitterness in the flavor and finish. Aroma is a little grainy and grassy. Decent body and alcohol is hidden very well here. A bit of a grainy chalky finish on things.

11% BDIPA, so chill. Burnt malts, caramel sweetness, bright spicey hop, and some boozy notes.

This wraps up my reviews from the RnH Kuhnhenn event. I got in around 20 ratings, and I still have a ways to go before I try everything these guys have done! This was probably my favorite of the night. A double black IPA, and a superb one too - wow! Unexpectedly sweet, with a roasty, tangy aroma. I tasted orange, cherry, sugars, and esters in with the hops. I totally concur with their description of it btw (above). I hope I don’t have to wait until the next eclipse to try this rich and mighty concoction again.

Tap @ rnh. Black color. Taste is sweet and hoppy. Almost liporter. But not as heavy. Awesome.
