Pailhead (4413) - Brownstown, Michigan, USA - FEB 21, 2008
UPDATED: MAR 23, 2008 On tap: The aroma consists of pineapple, banana, yeast, and moderate alcohol. It’s a hazy brown with some orange highlights and a small beige head. The flavor starts with pineapple and yeast. There is some faint banana in the middle along with some faint chocolate. The finish has a spicy herbal flavor to it along with some moderate alcohol. Full bodied with mild carbonation.

From a 750mL Bottle. Courtesy of CharlesDarwin. Moderately transparent, caramel amber colored pour with a thin head of wispy tan head. Sweet brown sugar and toffee malt aromas combine with some higher alcohols and yeast character to form some pleasing raisin and prune dark fruits. Hints of star anise spice. Medium bodied, lightly carbonated mouthfeel with a somewhat sticky texture. Caramel and biscuit malt flavors, darkened up by raisin and plum. Some lighter coconut notes add a vanillin-like quality. Toward the finish, the spicy phenol notes develop a heavy pepper flavor, sharpened by a bright cardomom or grains of paradise flavor. Finishes dry and nutty with a lingering spice. Thanks, Tom!

Tasting @ Dr. Bill’s (so where are the Cali ratings?). Poured a hazy deep amber color with an off-white head. The aroma was fairly herbal and spicy. The flavor was fruity with some sweetness. Much less herbal and spiced in the flavor than I expected after that aroma. Medium body and kind of dry on the finish.

Dark brown/black colored. This was fairly straightforward. Aroma of dark fruits, some spice, and earthy malt. Taste was dark fruits, banana, spice, hints of chocolate, fairly sweet overall. Not too hard to drink, but lacked the complexity. Still a decent belgian.

Black colored body with a one inch tan head. Spicy fruit and licorice notes in the nose, light on the palate and thin when tasted, with boozy licorice and spicy cardamom bread notes. Wet, slick, oily olive, lime and licorice flavors makes me worry that something isn’t exactly right with this one. A bit boozy and a bit hard to enjoy.

Bottle shared by Styles. Murky red-brown body, medium cream head. Nose of anise and brown sugar, earthy, with some pepper. Sharp body with brown sugars, toast, dark fruits (plums, grape), and hot alcohol. Spice elements are balanced by heavy malts. There’s something about the spicing I don’t like, but the beer is solid.

On tap @ the brewpub: Pours a dark brown with a thin white head. Aroma, lots of dark fruits, caramel and molasses. Flavor, caramel, fruity notes, earthy hops, some yeast, and spices. Finishes smooth with a slight warming from the booze. Pretty solid.

draft at Solstice Party.....poured a cloudy and muddy caramel brown with a tan head......aromas of black licorice, caramel malt, spices, and dark fruit....flavors of dark fruit and caramel. light spices also add to the package. pretty sweet/.syrupy overall and very little in terms of carbonation.... i regretably only sampled the taster size. should have had a few more ounces of this to give it a more thorough and evaluative rating.

Tasted at the Kuhnhenn Winter Solstice, snifter: After waiting 40 minutes to taste a beer this has better be good... finally my beer (or was it Chris’ beer?)

Near opaque with a creamy head and okay lace. The aroma has notes of dark sugar, chocolate, plum, banana, clove, herbal hops in a very estery package. The taste starts sweet with ripened fruit supported by lots of spice and herbs. Seems a bit like a dark saison if you ask me. The mouth feel is oily and lush with an aggressive warming at the end. A very nice brew that I dug the more I drank it. YUMMY stuff!
