Sweet caramel malt and red berry aroma. Flavor is berries and caramel with just a touch of chocolate. Creamy on the palate. Very nice. Bockyhorsey (2487), Mesa, Arizona, USA Jul 8, 2008 Sampled at Bocky Bash on 7-5-08. Good raspberry aroma. Murky brown body with not much of a head. For me got a strwberry fruit flavor and milky caramel creamy candy as well. Glad some one brought this was about ready to give up the cat in a trade for this one. dpjuart (670), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 7, 2008 (500) 187 mL bottle from the brewery, 2007 vintage. Pours brown/amber with red/purple hues. Very little head, a mild fizzy puff out of the bottle dissipating to a washer size ring in the center of the glass (weird). Nose is chocolate covered raspberries and strawberries, mild blueberry and sweet port wine aroma. Taste is sweet berry, rasp and straw, with a nice chocolate flavor. Fruity and sweet like a port wine, mild grape and some blueberry. Lots of alcohol hotness and flavor lingering well into the after. Some oaky characteristics. Dry with a balanced bitter. This really seems to be a heckuva lot more potent that the 11.7% on the bottle. It has a slightly carbonated character, but mouth feel is more like a nice whiskey or wine. Very solid offering. Like, unbelievably solid. Hudspart (371), Hudsonville, Michigan, USA Jul 7, 2008 Bottle suprisingly found in store in Grand Rapids. 2007 vintage. Unbelievable beer. Pours very heavy with a small head. Strong aroma of raspberries with slight chocolate hidden behind the raspberry aroma. Flavor of raspberry and chocolate with a slight finish of caramel and fruits. Almost like a meal. Sparky27 (1567), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jul 7, 2008 Bottle sampled at the 7/5/08 Bocky Bash locals tasting. Pours a cloudy brown with minimal off white head. Nose is caramel, raspberry cheesecake, toffee and brown sugar. Taste is chocolate, caramel, light raspberry and molasses. Medium, creamy mouth feel. Was expecting more raspberry/chocolate in the aroma and taste. Not bad though. badbeer (432), Iowa, USA Jul 5, 2008 2004 6.3 oz wax sealed bottle.
Pours a somewhat cloudy reddish brown with an off-white head that does at least retain around the edges. Smell is powerful and complex, but I’ll try my best. Sweet with caramel, brown sugar, some chocolate and some raspberry. It also seems quite vinous, I get hints of port and sherry. Raspberry is first to greet my tongue, it’s quickly followed by flavors of port, chocolate dipped dark fruit, and very sweet caramel. I also get a bit of alcohol in the finish, it’s not hot, but it is there. Medium carbonation, medium bodied with a dry-ish finish. An exceptional beer and definitely a sipper, this is certainly worth seeking out. drinkandrive (2), ijamsville, Maryland, USA does not count Jul 4, 2008 after trying over 80 beers from the top 100 its time for me to start reviewing!
the appearance of dark diluted honey/ruby/no head
smell is of carmel razz prune and booze
taste of carmel moving to fruit finishing with alcohol
mouthfeel was syrupy, mildly chewy, tartness at the tip and alc at rear
Drinkability! from a cup or beer bong give me more.. this beer was great and world class for its style(s)
Beerman6686 (1266), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 1, 2008 POured a dark ruby red color with basically no head. Aroma is of tons of raspberries, some coffee and maybe a little bit of alcohol. Flavor is very much raspberries at the beginning, and then a nice toffee caramel, chocolate finish. Extremely good and complex.
