spud1987 (46), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA May 24, 2008 Wow! This is pretty awesome. Aroma is strong of raspberry and chocolate. Flavor is the same with a woody note also. Alcohol at the finish. Pretty amazing. Actually worth the $13 for the bottle. toddkrem (78), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA May 23, 2008 Smells like chocolate raspberry. Taste of the same. Dark appearance and dark head. Drank the 2007 from a bottle. I like blushing monk better though. LinusStick (1831), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 21, 2008 Thanks Mr Stitch for getting me this. Every sip is like heaven. Aroma was perfect. The most chocolate in an aroma I’ve ever experienced (along with a solid raspberry backbone). Pour was a nice deep dark brown with no head. Taste was perfect. Strong chocolate and raspberry taste throughout. Very strong and full taste with a nice tart raspberry aftertaste. This is amazing. JB175 (1660), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA May 20, 2008 2004 bottle. Rating #1200 - thanks to everyone who traded me this! Wonderful plum coloring with a very small head. Aroma is a thick mix of berries and barleywine - molasses, raspberries, currants, maple, wood, and spice. Flavor has a very unique raspberry-wood-brown sugar mix that is incredibly interesting and highly drinkable. Smooth and thick - incredible mouthfeel. Great to try - its no wonder this bad boy is top 50. mattmc1973 (301), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA May 19, 2008 Updated: Apr 3, 20096.3 oz bottle purchased from Champane’s Wine. Pours dark ruby red with small head that dissipates fully. Aroma is incredible, very rich nose of raspberry, chocolate, caramel, plums, and someone mentioned in another review German chocolate cake, which is a good description. Taste of raspberry and caramel, with a finish of alcohol burn. Thick and creamy mouthfeel. Clearly a quality brew, very rich, definitely a sipper. Bit too much for me, though.
Update: Had on tap at the brewery a couple of times now, and wow, it’s sooo much better on draft. The aroma and taste are amazing. I’m bumping my scores a bit. fiver29 (703), Cleveland, Ohio, USA May 18, 2008 #200! 2004 Vintage courtesy of jvmiller. Bottle pours dark brown with very little head. The aroma on this brew is amazing. Chocolate leads to caramel sweetness, raspberry, and then more chocolate to finish the smell. Mouthfeel is very silky with some carbonation. It has a nice medium base to it. The base malts in this remind me somewhat of a lighter base version of the darklord. Taste is what I expected. Flavors of chocolate raspberries, caramel, and dark chocolate come together perfectly. Overall this is what a fruit beer should be. Next time I’m in Michigan I am going to have to stop by the brewery to check out what else they have. bdigital (585), Ft Wayne, Indiana, USA May 17, 2008 ’07 Bottle: Dark amber pour with no head. I’m absolutely speechless about the aroma on this...f’ing massive notes of raspberries, caramel, german chocolate cake, plums and honey all compliment each other perfectly. Exquisite mouth feel, very silky yet not heavy. The flavor on this gently kneels down to the nose but still has quite the clout...cocoa, raspberries, dark malts and brachs caramel squares are all noted. This stuff is ridiculous, I only wish I could get my hands on some of the ’04 bottles. stefanje (937), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA May 15, 2008 6 oz bottle courtesy of Schroppfy. Poures a murky burgundy color with a small head that soon disappears. The aroma is big with sweet red fruits, raspberry can be identified; also present in the nose is dark chocolate. The flavor is rich with ripe tart raspberries and caramel. the mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. The finish is long and sticky sweet with lingering caramel. Overall: A first rate concoction. A must try.
