Jmichael (633), Asheville, North Carolina, USA Aug 5, 2007 poured into small tulip. 2004. wow, wow, wow, good stuff, I was excited for this but did it match my expectations. it is good. pours a dark red with bubbly presence. malty dark chocolate rasberry aroma. dark chocolate rasberry on taste with a mild coffee finish. offers a smack of dark chocolate on the aftertaste. has a spritzy front with a malty finish. talk about complexity, this is it, the middle offers you a peek to what this beer has to offer. it’s like "the chocolate cherry from the heart shaped box" (jay) sweet, complex and good, very good, a wonderful mouthful with complex chocolate, malt, and the rasberry offering the balance... thanks to my BA friend Thomashardy for this treat. MadIndian (987), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 4, 2007 2004 bottle sampled with Stegosaurus. Steg was exicited when he received this retired beer. Brown pour with a cognac smell. Had a wine taste of fruit molasses and alcohol. Absolutely smooth. Thanks little bro and thanks DrBayern. The cerimonial humping of the bottle was done. stegosaurus (1882), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 4, 2007 2004 bottle sampled shared with Mad indian thanks to DrBayern for sending this brew to me. Pours clear dark brown with no head at all. Aroma of Fruit, molasses, sweetness, wood, and sherry. The flavor is exceptionally smooth, sweet, fruit, sherry, and finishes with a nice alcohol warmth. Skyview (4007), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Aug 1, 2007 Sampled from 2004 vintage, 187 ml bottle, pours a clear brown amber brew wth no head or ring on glass side. Aroma of rich dark chocolate, molasses with a very faint raspberries. Taste is smooth, creamy no carbonation and full bodied. Flavors picked up included chocolate and caramel with some tart dark berries. Finish is smooth, semi-syrupy with a tart raspberry aftertaste. A terrific treat! Thanks goes to olso2116 for sharing this retired gem. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Jul 29, 2007 Updated: Jan 2, 20082004 bottle. Thanks to yjb for the sample! Leathery brown with a reddish hint. Not so much as the suggestion of a head. Delightfully sweet malty honey raspberry. Creamy some some subtle unoffensive alcohol beneath the surface. Caramel, creme brulee. A little bit of molsasses. Flat as can be on the tongue. No carbonation. Not syrupy, yet thick. It’s as though the alcohol cuts the viscosity. Relatively tart raspberry over a sweet smooth malt. Light on the tastebuds, ethereal really. Balanced alcohol and raspberry tartness against malt. Some diacetyl, but it’s largely cut by the alcohol. Mellow with a clean fruity finish. I didn’t pick up much chocolate like most people, but I don’t think it really hurt this beauty!
2007 vintage, thanks again yjb! Differences? Bigger dark malt character. Thicker and fuller on the tongue. More chocolate. More raspberry in the nose, for sure, fuller and richer at least. Less alcohol? Perhaps a bit murkier? Maybe age will make this thing shine just as much. In the meantime, I have to give this same for appearance and nose. Up the palate to 4-5, downgrade flavor to 7 and overall to 16-17. Current scores reflect averages. Guerde (693), Welcome, Minnesota, USA Jul 28, 2007 Thanks to olso2116 for sharing this gem. Poured a dark ruby color with absolutely no head. The aroma is amazing with chocolate, caramel, molasses, with a hint of raspberry. Taste is very sweet, and is almost similar to a chocolate cake, but there is raspberry present as well. The beer finished very smoothly. This truly is a dessert in a bottle. OSLO (825), Perth, Australia Jul 28, 2007 Updated: Nov 1, 2007[Bottle, vintage 2004 via trade with Footbalm (thanks!)] Poured dark brown with no head. Aroma was incredible--I would go higher than 10 with the rating if I could--a blast of chocolate, caramel, molasses, with notes of vanilla, raspberry, oak and bourbon (quite faint). Talk about a flavor explosion! Very sweet with the main tastes coming through being caramel and chocolate. Great finish. One of the smoothest beers I have ever had. Wow, this stuff has blown me away, I can only hope that someday it is produced again. BDR (2139), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Jul 28, 2007 Many thanks to olso2116 for sharing this rare treat. 2004 Vintage. No head on this murky read pour. Chocolate molasses and faint raspberries on the nose. Caramel, faint chocolate, and sweet raspberries. Definite raspberry bite to the finish.
