Appearance: Pours a brackish, blackish-purple body with no head beyond a few, large bubbles.
Smell: Finely expressive nose of macerated, tart-scented black raspberry pulp and supporting earthy notes of cherry pipe tobacco, unsweetened chocolate, tree bark, molasses, and maple. An inkling of oxidation, too.
Taste: Beyond the berry, there are tastes of baking chocolate, blackstrap molasses, maple syrup, and a few choice hunks of gnarled licorice root. You even get a pinch of aromatic tobacco. There’s a fair share of oxidation evident. Also, I detect a tiny, tiny touch of roast. There’s a profusion of vinous raspberry flavor that is, at times, a bit tart and medicinal. The alcohol presence, while noticeable, isn’t ever obtrusive. A bit of warmth in the slow, leisurely finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. No carbonation.
Drinkability: A pleasing, pleasant brew, though I would like to try a different, more recent vintage sometime. In summation, it reminds me of that Chambord Liqueur you get in the "Holy Hand Grenade" bottle. I hear up in Michigan it’s regarded as a local celebrity of sorts. timbeer (45), Rosemount, Minnesota, USA Feb 19, 2009 2004 vintage bottle shared by MatSciGuy - thanks man. Pours a cloudy brownish tone with little to now head. Nose of chocolate, raspberry and plenty of alcohol. These smells carried through on the taste but they seemed to have waned a bit. It was warming on the tongue with some mild bitterness. An OK beer but not one of my favorites. chicagodri (1021), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 18, 2009 Thanks Bobby91w for the trade. After watching my Illinois basketball team lose tonight after scoring 33 against Penn State at home...I needed to crack open a good beer. I wish I had ten of these to forget the last two hours of my life. Pours ruby/pink when held up to the light, which no head. Aroma of caramel, raspberry, and chocolate. Sweet and sticky, this beer tastes fantastic and is truly an after dinner drink. Great raspberry flavor. kegbear (265), Orange, California, USA Feb 15, 2009 Bottles thanks to glouglouburp and MrChopin. Thanks guys! Aroma of rasberry, chocolate and caramel. Tastes like a raspberry truffle dipped in Angel’s Share. Aroma of molasses, port, brownies and raspberry candy. Dirty brown colour, small beige head that diminishes almost completely leaving no lace. Very sweet, light bitter, raspberries, brownies, port, quite malty, chocolate. Alcohol is hidden, sticky mouth feel. Like Thomas Hardys with some raspberry and without the hop. poolboy (66), Lafayette, Indiana, USA Feb 4, 2009 A tough one to find. I got mine at the brewery. Not my favorite to drink, but a very well-crafted and interesting brew. Pinkish color with little carbonation. Tastes of raspberry, chocolate, and caramel. A minty aftertaste. Very thin, you could almost believe this was a wine. bfeldmann (1042), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Feb 3, 2009 Wow thanks eagle for scoring this one. Poured a redish brown with zero head and tons of sedimentation. Aroma was of chocolate and a tons of raspberries. Flavor was perfect, tart but not crazy raspberries with a well balanced chocolate/caramel, toasted malts. Solid beer.
