Aroma of chocolate, raspberry and alcohol. Alcohol is muted but still noticeable in the flavour. Chocolate with a molasses hint and faint trace of advertised caramel. Raspberry in the finish. Begs the question of what it tasted like fresh. Smooth but seems a bit tired. BMan1113VR (2981), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Jul 26, 2008 2007 bottle thanks to pepsican. Pours with a light brown head that vanishes quickly. Murky dark red body with strong alcohol legs on the glass. Intoxicating (literally and fig.) aroma of raspberry, chocolate, caramel, more chocolate, jammy-ness, peaches and sherry. Taste is raspberry jam and caramel. Very super-syrupy mouthfeel. Borderline cloyingly sweet. Reminds me like a very done up caramel and chocolate version of DFH Fort. Alcohol is a bit "hot". Very good, but the bottle size is all that one needs of this beer. beerbuzzmontreal (2946), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 10, 2006 2004 vintage, Maudite glass. The pour reveals a cloudy dark ruby color with a thin tan head that diminishes to a small ring. As I stick my nose in the glass I feel joy, it feels that I’m sniffing a potent liquor or a good port wine. I can already tell that I’m going to love this beer. The second time I stick my nose in I’m more prepared to be amazed, I can concentrate on the different elements, there is chocolate, raspberries and caramel, the alcohol is barely noticeable. A third sniff reveals something close to plums or grapes. Ok, enough chit-chat, let’s taste this marvel ! Wow, I’m astonished, bewildered, amazed, in love. The flavor has an extremely balanced and harmonious blend of chocolate, caramel and raspberries. Again I’m reminded of grapes, but now it’s more like candied grapes. And again the alcohol is barely noticeable. The body is full with a very liquorous and oily texture while the carbonation is low. This is an extremely well made beer, a highly amazing liquid dessert. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 4, 2009 2007 bottle shared by Brad at Jackie O’s in Athens. The beer is a deep reddish-gold color with a very thin off-white head that disappears pretty fast. Spotty lacing on the glass. The aroma is raspberries and cocoa along with a touch of malt. Rich body with sweet raspberry, chocolate and sherry flavors along with notes of malt. The finish is fruity with a finish of plums and malt. Right there with New Glarus Belgian Red. Very good all around. 5000 (2900), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Oct 3, 2005 Bottle (thanks to MrFacto): Burgundy caramel in color, small pink tinted film for a head, quite viscous, cloudy in opacity, with sparce lacing.   Raspberry and marshmallow aroma, also hints of cherry and chocolate.   Similar flavor, yet it is seemingly artificial in nature.   It seems to be very much like a raspberry and cherry tootsie roll pop, tttthhhrreeeee bites and you are at the center.   ABV is very well hidden, very smooth on the tongue, goes down very easy.   Slight warming finish.   I almost wished this one to taste more alcoholic.   Its unreal how easy this one was to drink for being 18%, yet it did seem a bit artificial to me.   I personally didn’t think this was top 50 material, but I did enjoy it.   Perhaps a re-rate in the future is in order.   Thanks again to Matt for providing the bottle at the tasting.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jun 6, 2006 Updated: Mar 1, 2007Dark ruby, almost no head, no lacing. Smells like black chocolate with nuts (pralines) but no raspberries. The raspberries show-up in the taste along with the chocolate and some earthy flavours. Very sweet. Alcohol well hidden. Almost no carbonation. Medicinal flavours and cough syrup mouthfeel (a six-pack of this and I feel cured of everything). I was a little disappointed by this famous beer firt time I had it (bottle: 4.0) but I had it again draught at EBF 07 and I’m raising my score to 4.2. Still nowhere near the top-10 non-retired beers (according to global ratebeer ratings) and not even worth the ultra-high price tag. after4ever (2863), Brier, Washington, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 14/20 | May 28, 2006 7-oz of the ’04. Split it, courtesy of BitBucket. Raspberry patch and yeast on the nose. The berry essence comes through clean on the nose. Raspberries lead the attack, along with some prunes. As it warms, chocolate and some dark nut notes emerge. Very velvety, satisfying mouthfeel. Absolutely a dessert beer, though it is alarmingly quaffable (in my case). DougShoemaker (2856), Toronto, Canada
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Dec 29, 2005 Heavenly raspberry/chocolate aroma, murky burgundy, tiniest off-white head, some pretty lace, seeds are floating here! Flavour is real raspberry and chocolate, a true marriage! The most full bodied beer I’ve had with fruit, sweet, tart, complex and dangerously drinkable, alcohol is barely noticed. Incredible!! Thank You So Much wohlfs!
