UPDATED: APR 24, 2006 Re-rate... í04 Bottle.... This beer rocks!... Still great with lots of chocolate and raspberrys, but not quite the mouthfeel I remember. Less than full-bodied. Adjusted the score. Still a wonderful creation. Maybe doesnít age as well as it could. Thanks to Dutch70 for the bottle.****Original Rating**** í04Bottle...RBSG2005... This beer rocks! Mahogany lager with a small, creamy well-tanned head. Raspberry cobbler dripping with rich, milk chocolate sauce; toffee, butterscotch. All things malty, fruity and rich fill my nose. Chocolate-raspberry sauce coats the tongue while my face is lightly slapped with warm, fruity alcohol. Full-bodied and syrupy with light carbonation. Lengthy, fruity, warming finish... and I thought only New Glarus knew how to properly brew using fruit in America. Got to get my hands on more of this mega-world class brew!

Well, tonight is my Birthday. As I sit here, 1 year closer to death, what better way to drown my sorrows than in a glass of this fine beer. Big thanks to EDA for this one! Poured a hazy brownish-red color with a very small sized off white head. Aromas of chocolate covered raspberries, tart cherries, and other dark fruits. Tastes of tart raspberries, chocolate, caramel, and light alcohol (but no where near the 18%). Very easy to drink. Amazing. I had this one after dinner and what a perfect after dinner/desert beer.

Amazingly deep dark brown beer with ruby accents. Aroma is of sweet chewy malts, strong aroma of raspberry tartness, toasty sweet malts, chocolate, raspberry aroma. Peppery aroma, toast, sweet chocolate and caramel maltiness wrapped in a delicious robe of ripe raspberry. I canít believe that a beer can taste this good.

Bottle 2007. Reddish brown pour. Aromas of wood, caramel, port, honey, vanilla and some chocolate raspberries. Flavor is good, but really not what I expected. Initial hit of chocolate, raspberry, caramel, vanilla and thick mouthfeel is offset by too much alcohol. I was unimpressed with the finish to be honest. But I did like the beer.

What are they trying to accomplish? I have had chocolate and either raspberry or strawberry filling..in fruit wine and liquors naturally or more than naturally sweet. Thatís dessert. Yes in this beer there is distinct flavours from the eisbock, the chocolate, the tart raspberry. Yes, very much like an American filled chocolate. To me, this is a fruit beer. I have had good beers with chocolate. I have had Unibroue and other fruit beers. This, the whole thing is an experiment that more or less worked. I know its against the grain, but I have to call the shot..itís overated.

2007 bottle thanks to pepsican. Pours with a light brown head that vanishes quickly. Murky dark red body with strong alcohol legs on the glass. Intoxicating (literally and fig.) aroma of raspberry, chocolate, caramel, more chocolate, jammy-ness, peaches and sherry. Taste is raspberry jam and caramel. Very super-syrupy mouthfeel. Borderline cloyingly sweet. Reminds me like a very done up caramel and chocolate version of DFH Fort. Alcohol is a bit "hot". Very good, but the bottle size is all that one needs of this beer.

Kuhnhenn Raspberry Eisbock pours a deep red violet appearance with little to no head. Rich raspberry syrupy, caramel, toffee, mild chocolate aroma. Rich, somewhat tart, raspberry fruity, caramel, toffee flavor. Honestly, this has a lot of flavor going on but it has burnt, tar-like taste that I donít particularly care for. This was poured from a 2007 nip bottle.

2004 - abject thanks to lachesis for sharing this one!! Fully hazy brown chocolate coloure; virtually no perceptible head. Buttertoffees, exploding out of the glass; caramel bar with running filling, seemingly ready to go creeping out of the glass. Very little fruitiness. Again the same running caramel toffee in the taste, but this time with some (obviously sourish) fruit. Difficult to say whether raspberry or other red fruit. Raisins and apples in rhum for a dessert. Retronasal, Iíve got not-quite-bitter black chocolate and more near-tart fruit. Very well-bodied, nearly fully viscous. Kaiserschmarrelín, Tarte Tatin,... dessert top-beer anyway.

11026 hook me up with a bottle, has to be one of the best wedding presents we recieved. The wife and I opened this while camping in Washington, after a great day spent at the beach. Has a tan head on top of a purple and deep red body. Amazing complexity in the aroma: bourbon, creamed raspberries, cherries, sweet (but not hot) alcohol, oak, peaches and fruit seeds, very husky and hearty aroma. Amazingly rich and sweet up front, full of wood, tart raspberries and pie (think cobler), some brandy and graham cracker. Warms the throat and stomach, to me it felt a little like heartburn but just about anything gives me heartburn anyways. Rich mocha and woody fruits in the finish, rich and hot at the end. A wonderful beer, hype confirmed!

Looksjust as wonderful as any bottle of KRE, but itís fully consumed in oxidation. Generally nothing left in the nose but a hiuge, heavy dose of wet cardboard and dogfood, and only the faintest, most stale raspeberry flavor is left. Pretty disappointing. A fresh 2007 bottle was opened at the same time, and it was on par as the fresh 2007 from draft, rated below.
2007 vintage on draft at Kuhnhenns
Seems to float in the glass without much presence, no head, not much in the way of legs or lacing. The raspberry note is very nice, very fruity, pulpy, not overly sweet or candied, but the chocolate seems weak/thin, and doesnít match the richness of the 2004 bottle. It doesnít effect my numbers at all, and I hope to drink the 2004 again with about 4 years on it, and the 2007 with at least one to get a better sence of how this beer ages.

UPDATED: JUN 13, 2009 Sensuous raspberry and blackberry coulis over chocolate mousse and dense brownies...Roasted serenity as the perfect crust for a liquorous pie...Heavy throughout the glass, but the tart fingers and warm alcohol heart know how to lighten the caress...This pastry chef is having so much fun, itís contagious...The 2007 vintage is perhaps not as chocolatey sweet, but itís still a wondrous dessert brew...
