Quake1028 (625), Tampa, Florida, USA Mar 16, 2008 Courtesy of Degarth. Thank you, sir.
Black pour, inky and fully opaque....2 finger thick tan head that is going nowhere fast....tremendous sheet lacing....nose of coffee, vanilla bean, licorice, chocolate malts and some fruity esters....flavor profile the same, wonderful amounts of chocolate running throughout....lush, full bodied and very rounded....long finish, chocolate, vanilla and molasses, with a bit of a twang from the esters....exceptional brew....relatively high ABV is kept in check throughout....
The_Epeeist (872), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 3, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours a thick, dark brown that still produces a vigorous, splotchy tan head. Nose is molasses, dark roast and brown sugar. Medium to full body, a little chalky and sticky. Up front prickly carb with almost a nitro mouthfeel. Taste is a bit sour and acidic with raisin, espresso and pine. Tart blackberry finish. WeeHeavySD (1511), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jun 29, 2008 12oz via my main man, Hoppymeal, thank you derek. For some reason I though this was a regular old stout, but how could I expect that from Kuhnhenn Pours black with a 1 finger brown head that initially overflowed a bit. Nose is burnt coffee. Taste is sweet, full of coffee and chocolate and overall pretty nice. Could be a bit bigger, but the alcohol is actually pretty well hidden so I can’t complain too much. Nice beer. Glouglouburp (1852), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jun 17, 2008 In short: A very big highly roasted Imperial Stout that somehow does not feel over-the-top brutal. Average for the style. Decent sipper.
How: Bottle. Sample at Mondial de la Bière 2008
The look: Black body topped by a meadium tan head
In long: Aroma is highly roasted. Body is thick. The beer is certainly a very sweet but the high roastiness level is nose-to-nose with the syrupy sweetness and create a not-too-sweet sensation. Roasted coffee beans flavour followed by a good amount of bitter leafy hops. Body is big, very big, alcohol is rather well hidden. Basic stuff, nothing new really, but this beer is more drinkable than I though it would be. A decent sipper from a brewery where the word “moderation” is used as often as the word “floccinaucinihilipilification”. Rastacouere (5196), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Jun 5, 2008 Objectively speaking:
One of the sweetest imperial stouts around.
I like:
Dark chocolate and coffee aroma is engaging enough.
I dislike:
Highly syrupy palate. Headless. Almost no fruitiness. Salted olives/dill notes. Annoying molasses feel and quite cloying despite the subreptious intense bitterness. Obvious alcohol from the beginning until the end.
blankboy (2464), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 5, 2008 Bottle (12oz) shared with and courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours black, like motor oil, with a large frothy light-brown head -- Nice! Aroma’s roasty along with alcohol, lots of green hops, creamy milk and coffee. Very roasty flavour along with bitter chocolate, coffee and plenty of hops. Long bitter finish. This is 12.5%? Really? If you say so. Medium bodied, oily mouthfeel. Very good stuff, I really enjoyed it.
