kujo9 (1043), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA Feb 14, 2008 2/13/08 Brew Kettle Ogrefest: Black w/ a thin, but lasting beige head. Roasty and chocolate aromas w/ a light bit of raisiny dark fruit. Nutty, toffee, and toasted malt. Raisiny gets stronger as it warms, but stays moderate. The flavor pretty much mirrors the aroma with chocolate and roasted coffee flavor, but the raisiny character is a bit more restrained. Herbal hops mid palate with light caramel and nutty flavors. A bit of an acidic note from the dark grains and carbonation. The finish is semi dry w/ chocolate and roasted coffee flavor that carries over into the lingering aftertaste, but brown sugar comes in there along with the lingering bitterness. Highly carbonated for a stout IMHO as it is biting on the palate. Smooth after the initial bite, full bodied, and warming, almost hot alcohol. Good beer, but could use a bit of age for me to develope a bit more dark fruit character and smooth out the bitterness.
after4ever (1652), Brier, Washington, USA Jul 25, 2008 12-oz. Thanks, Ben! Black. Dense but thin burnt tan head. Decent brief strings of lace. Big plummy/pruney nose. Thick creamy body with present carb. Soooo much coffee and fruit. Insanely powerful, even out of balance. But they manage to carry it across the finish line somehow. Chalky, creamy, sticky. This is like ten big stouts all at once. Retorp (2148), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 18, 2008 Courtesy of me via Ibrew2or3, via his sister.
The aroma is chocolate, cocoa, fruit and coffee. Not overly intense, but decently concentrated. The body is black with some ruby brown hues and it holds a thumb thick, lasting, mocha head. The flavor offers up cooked dark fruit, black chocolate, roast coffee and molasses. Very nice mouth feel, almost has an oatmeal thickness to it. While tasty something isn’t quite right about it. Something I can’t exactly peg down. Luckily I have 2 more bottles to figure it out.
The_Epeeist (892), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 3, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours a thick, dark brown that still produces a vigorous, splotchy tan head. Nose is molasses, dark roast and brown sugar. Medium to full body, a little chalky and sticky. Up front prickly carb with almost a nitro mouthfeel. Taste is a bit sour and acidic with raisin, espresso and pine. Tart blackberry finish. WeeHeavySD (1564), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jun 29, 2008 12oz via my main man, Hoppymeal, thank you derek. For some reason I though this was a regular old stout, but how could I expect that from Kuhnhenn Pours black with a 1 finger brown head that initially overflowed a bit. Nose is burnt coffee. Taste is sweet, full of coffee and chocolate and overall pretty nice. Could be a bit bigger, but the alcohol is actually pretty well hidden so I can’t complain too much. Nice beer. Glouglouburp (1876), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jun 17, 2008 In short: A very big highly roasted Imperial Stout that somehow does not feel over-the-top brutal. Average for the style. Decent sipper.
How: Bottle. Sample at Mondial de la Bière 2008
The look: Black body topped by a meadium tan head
In long: Aroma is highly roasted. Body is thick. The beer is certainly a very sweet but the high roastiness level is nose-to-nose with the syrupy sweetness and create a not-too-sweet sensation. Roasted coffee beans flavour followed by a good amount of bitter leafy hops. Body is big, very big, alcohol is rather well hidden. Basic stuff, nothing new really, but this beer is more drinkable than I though it would be. A decent sipper from a brewery where the word “moderation” is used as often as the word “floccinaucinihilipilification”.
