jtw (909), farmington, Michigan, USA Dec 25, 2007 12 oz bottle from the winter solstice party 2007, green and gummy aroma, burnt grains and an inflated sweetness (apparently from tapioca and rice?) interesting sticky mouthfeel - sweet and roasty. seems like an overabundance of roasted malt was used for bittering all the malt and sugary additions. no noticeable alcohol heat, probably helped by the residual sweetness. still quite good despite the sugar-high.
Dogbrick (2209), Columbus, Ohio, USA Aug 19, 2008 Thanks to Rogueone for sharing a bottle. This brew is a completely opaque black color with a medium thin dark brown head that recedes slowly. Patchwork lacing on the glass. Strong coffee aroma along with notes of roasted malt and nuts. Rich and smooth body with a nutty coffee flavor primarily, and sweet malt and toffee with a touch of hops along for the ride. The finish is burnt malt and roasted coffee, with a lingering roasty aftertaste. Overall this beer is just a couple pegs short of being in the top tier of Imperial Stouts. kramer (1864), sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 15, 2008 12 oz bottle, via BBB63. Pours a pitch black body with a one finger dark brown head that receded to a thin ring quickly. Big roasty and molasses laced nose with some burnt malt, dark fruits, light alcohol, tar, and earthy yeastiness. Really astringent and burnt malt flavors take you back right off the bat, really super sweet, then the heavy roast and molasses emerge on the finish with a hefty dose of alcohol. There’s almost a slight acidic kick to the finish that reminds me of overly extracted coffee or espresso and a lingering saltiness. This one’s just a little too astringent and over the top for me. Heavy viscous body with moderate fizzy carbonation. Really long lingering finish. Overall, I can’t say that this was the most enjoyable Imperial Stout for me. There’s just nothing smooth about this. mabel (1583), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 8, 2008 [1393-20080530] Bottle. Boozy caramel molasses aroma has a hint of sweet bark. Black brown body with a foamy dark brown head. Sweet malty wood flavour has a hints of a burnt crust. Thick full body. Sugary sweet finish, fair balance.
(5T @ Mondial; Montreal, QC) after4ever (1696), Brier, Washington, USA Jul 25, 2008 12-oz. Thanks, Ben! Black. Dense but thin burnt tan head. Decent brief strings of lace. Big plummy/pruney nose. Thick creamy body with present carb. Soooo much coffee and fruit. Insanely powerful, even out of balance. But they manage to carry it across the finish line somehow. Chalky, creamy, sticky. This is like ten big stouts all at once. Retorp (2154), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 18, 2008 Courtesy of me via Ibrew2or3, via his sister.
The aroma is chocolate, cocoa, fruit and coffee. Not overly intense, but decently concentrated. The body is black with some ruby brown hues and it holds a thumb thick, lasting, mocha head. The flavor offers up cooked dark fruit, black chocolate, roast coffee and molasses. Very nice mouth feel, almost has an oatmeal thickness to it. While tasty something isn’t quite right about it. Something I can’t exactly peg down. Luckily I have 2 more bottles to figure it out.
