12 oz 2007 Bottle shared by Odeed; Black with brown edges and a big tan head; nose is chocolate, with light smokiness; flavor of hot alcohol, light soy sauce note, and alcohol for the finish; body is thin, very mediocre impy and I slowly drank 9 of the 12 ounces hoping it might improve!

(bottle from miketd.THANK YOU SIR)boy this baby is black.even held up to the light i get nothing but abyss.the head is big and light brown in color.as the head sits it leaves thick lacing on the glass.the aroma is a mix of soy sauce, liquid smoke, alcohol, and a tiny bit of cardboard.almost like its oxidized?although i really doubt it.the flavor boats what the aroma does, along with the following.seltzer water, beef jerky, prunes, hairspray, and sugar.honestly to me this is just a big hot mess.i also dont see how aging it would help because i think time would just bring more of the cardboard flavor out.

12 ounce bottle shared by Mike. Poured opaque black with a brown head and some legs. Notes of licorice, raison, and soy sauce. Lots of alcohol. Huge agressive chocolate flavors. HOT!!!! Light body. Low carbonation. Dry hot finish. I sure hope this ages well.

Silphium (3160) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - DEC 31, 2007
2007 bottle shared by BBB63. Opaque dark brown body with yeasty haze, thin tan head. Classic super-high ABV aroma, with sharp, nearly cloying sweet malts and alcohol, in addition to roasted malts and chocolate. Extremely sweet body, vinous, with abundant residual sugars and alcohol. Primary characteristics are chocolate and grape, the last especially evident in the tart finish. Boozy and big, but not syrupy. Definitely a sipper. Very different from the Road Rash IS.

On tap @ the brewpub: Pours a thick black with a tan head. Aroma, roasted notes, dark fruits, and chocolate, a bit of an alcohol burn. Flavor, alcohol, chocolate, roasted malts, lots of dark fruits, and a boozy hot finish. Looking forward to seeing how this ages.

Pailhead (4633) - Brownstown, Michigan, USA - DEC 24, 2007
Bottle: Huge aroma loaded with black licorice, chocolate, plums, grapes, and alcohol. It pours a dark brown, virtually black, with a moderate beige head that leaves behind some thin spotty lacing. The flavor starts with lots of black licorice, plums, and grapes. There’s also a moderate chocolate presence. The finish has moderate piney hops, alcohol, and very faint black coffee. Full-bodied and syrupy with mild carbonation.

BBB63 (5964) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - DEC 24, 2007
Bottle at 18% ABV, Opaque with tan head and some lace. There is an oily inky thick film that clings to the glass. The aroma has notes of rich tobacco, heavy charred and chocolate malt, coffee, molasses, fig, wood, clove and herbs with moderate phenolic activity. The taste starts with lovely malt base (chocolate and smoke) supported by lush twangy fruit. Syrupy sugars, Pumpernickel and Rye bread, resiny leafy hops, and an astringent boozy finish. This has a thick syrupy mouth feel with a sharp biting edge. The finish is shockingly dry than expected. A big sipping beer that should age nicely. This beer ROCKS!

UPDATED: JAN 21, 2008 tap at solstice party....poured a very muddy dark brown with a thin almost non-existent tan head....aroma of caramel and lots of sweet malt as well as some chocolate notes. not sure if my taste buds and olfactory senses were just fried at this point but i got very little in the way of coffee and roast. the aroma left something to be desired......very boozy in the flavor as this was one of the first things i notices. then a plethora of sweet brown sugar and dark fruit.

Schroppfy (2360) - Łódż, Warsaw, Poland; Michigan, Ohio, USA - DEC 22, 2007
UPDATED: FEB 10, 2008 Impenetrably black, pours with a slight head, which doesn’t immediately vanish. Deeply roasty, insanely charred, BIG hop bitterness (pine sap), touches of bourbon and coffee. Smells like hot coffee left on the burner a long time plus burnt maple. Alcohol heat upon fully warmed like you would not believe. Good body, appropriate for the style. All in all a good stout but the serious alcohol presence could be tamed a bit. Age this one for decades.
