3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft during Guild Fest summer 2010. Found more old notes. Pours deep black with a thin dark tan head. Nose is licorice, char and booze. Lots of alcohol coming off, some fusel notes and then cocoa. On taste, big and has that alcohol sweetness to it that is somewhat overwhelming and somewhat unwanted. More charred grain notes and licorice. Pretty huge beer, finishes somewhat acrid. Interesting to try, but once is likely enough.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured from 12 oz bottle. Pours black with some tan head. Nose is some coffee, some dried fruits but alcohol is pervasive on the nose and on the taste too. There is some stinging bitterness on the back end that combines with the alcohol. I think I should have laid this one down for awhile to see if the heat mellowed.

3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
64oz growler from New Beer Distributors.
A: the first glass poured two full fingers of creamy tan head; the second yielded precious little. Mild, beady lace forms raindrops on the sides of my glass.
S: disappointing, as itís very subdued with dark fruit and booze being the only two items I can even detect. Thereís precious little here to savor, even from the first pour with plenty of head. Gets boozier as it warms.
T: plums, raisins, figs, and other dark fruits surprised me up front. Booze and roasty malts bring up the rear. Dry finish with plenty of alcoholic warmth, but really not harsh like I expected. Easily the fruitiest RIS Iíve ever consumed.
M: big, creamy body helps with the drinkability. Slippery and smooth on the tongue. This is as good as it gets without nitro.
D: pretty drinkable for an 18%, but Iím not sure I can stand more than one glass at a time. Definitely easier to drink than a fresh pour of Bourbon County Stout -- despite being nearly 50% stronger -- but still quite far behind other big boys like Dark Lord, 120 IPA, or DFH Fort. An enjoyable brew, but not one Iíd purchase again.

12 oz. bottle shared by jckp64- thanks again, John! 2007 vintage. 18% ABV?! I had no idea. Didnít see that on the bottle. Makes sense, though. Pours a dark, opaque brown with a big, foamy brown head that doesnít take long to settle down. The aroma shows some oxidization on top of milk chocolate, earth, molasses, and caramel malts. Less oxidation shows up in the flavor, which has dark fruits, chocolate, roasted malts, rust, molasses, and some warming booze. Medium-full bodied, with a smooth, warming mouthfeel and low carbonation. Interesting imperial stout, but Iíd probably wait less than 4 years to crack it next time.
