axilla (941), New Providence, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 14, 2008 bottle courtesy of Hopdog. Pour was a a medium amber/brown body with a small but foamy off white head. The aroma was quite malty with notes of carmel, some random dark fruits, and a mild citrus tang. The flavors started with an earthy sweetness that I couldn’t quite put my finger on with loads of black cherry, mild cough medicine, and a somewhat tangy finish. Very unique.
heemer77 (3611), Savannah, Missouri, USA Jul 17, 2008 Thanks for sharing, iowaherkeye. The body is cloudy dark copper with a light yellowish khaki head. The aroma has some leathery notes with some toffee. There is a little bit of sweet bread and earthy sweat. The taste has some light notes of leather and toffee. There is also a spicy note in the finish, like cinnamon. A decent and obviously big beer with a sticky body and noticeable alcohol. MaltOMeal (237), Land of Sugar, Texas, USA Jun 6, 2008 12 0z bottle thanks to skip from BA site. OK, I saw "Lager" on the label and that is what I was expecting, but that’s not what I got, fortunately. This was a dopplebock and wow what a punch this one carries! Pours a light orange but turns to copper in the glass. A thin, off-white head dissipated very quickly. Nose was spicy with malt and raisin. Taste was huge with spices, raisin and other dark fruit. Mouthfeel was medium-to-thick and creamy with alcohol warmth ever present and a bit too sweet for my preferences. Still, quite an impressive brew. Unfortunately for me, I had the glass on the floor by my chair and kicked it over in the dark while coming back to it. Very potent stuff! notalush (1972), Rawn-kawn-kohma, New York, USA May 19, 2008 Thanks to hailsquishface for the bottle - viscous, headless, hazy amber pour - heavy aroma of spices, cherries, brown sugar, raisin, a surprising amount of floral character - thick mouthfeel, with little to no carbonation - strong sweetness up front, followed by balancing strong spiciness and warming alcohol - a lot of raisin, rum and christmas spice cake kind of flavors going on - a moderate tartness and oxidation manifest late, which serves to balance out the sweetness, but once the sweetness is stripped from the palate, the alcohol becomes much more evident - gets a little medicinal - tasty, but too strong for any hope of balance - they sure do come close, though. Lothore (226), California, USA May 16, 2008 A- Pours a ruddy, orangey red color with some visible carbonation present. Small head which fades fairly quickly.
S- Smell is very floral, vanilla, sweet perhaps a bit funky, alcohol.
T- Taste starts off with cherry, a little medicinal, hoppy, sweet in the end with some definite alcohol warming.
M- Thick and syrupy with a bit of carbonation.
D- Certainly one to sip on. I enjoyed this one a lot but it is so strong 1 is all you need. Pastor (237), Maine, USA Apr 24, 2008 Thanks to goryshkewych for this wonderful winter larger
