JoshuaB (418), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 30, 2005 Updated: Feb 16, 2006Wouldnt really call this one a Dopplebock, but well.... Pours a super nice amber rose, rather clear, with minimal head. Nose is lots of fruity esters, plums and cherries, along with some yeast and spice. Taste is mad bubblegum. Also included are berries, raisins, and maple sugar, earthy vanilla. Yum yum. Perfect silky texture. Lighter in body, hides the alcohol well. I enjoyed this much more than the overhyped Raspberry Eisbock. Complex and easily drinkable. Not so negative, huh Mike? Pigfoot (2225), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Mar 3, 2005 Shadowy amber body, capped with a thin, but sure, off-white layer of foam.
Nose is rich, malty, strong, cognac and cherries, with chocolate on the side...slick, devilish, delightful.
Ahhhh...one sip and I know this is a juicy gem! Big, robust fruit, ooozing berries and grapes, rasins and dates, tangible texture, oily mouthfeel, and absolutely delicious!
flavor rebounds again and again, tastes better every time, too...can’t feel the booze yet, either, but it’s early, still.
this is a genius choice for a winter beer. I think I’ll open the window, for maximum effect. Intensely warming and fabulously flavored.
Another brilliant Kuhnhenn effort. Big surprise.
StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Mar 28, 2006 Slight hiss as the cap comes off, pouring as translucent and amber-copper in color with some saw dust over a grease splotch for the head, along with a creamy gray wrung. One of the best doppelbock aromas – unique, but wonderful: sweet vanilla, maple, cedar and chocolate harmoniously surge forth, ticked with hazelnut batter, apple-buttered raisins, anise, golden figs and black peppercorns. Flavor is a projectory of just that. Sweet, balanced libation. Apple butter plays out while nutmeg and pepper spice away. The ABV feel resides at the esophagus clamp, letting flavors dance everywhere else before entering its domain. Butterscotch, peppered toffee nougats, and maple cedar vats with vanilla blossom soaking in its pores. Rum raisin meets brandy meets peppery homemade apple pie filling. Elements of sweet pralines coated in caramel continue the flavor force. Oily, chewy ooze that causes palate smacks, teeth chomps and tongue tickles. Amped-up on all accords, with noble hops knighted and bordering usurper status. Sticky finish that leaves an undying, thirst-begging demand while caramel, butterscotch and peppercorn cling everywhere else. Big thanks to Clark for the much sought after bottle! Styles (1653), Taylor, Michigan, USA Mar 9, 2005 Updated: Jun 11, 2006Tap: Brilliant copper color with off white head. Aroma has loads of fruit, bubblgum, caramel, mollasses, and faint woodsy/smokiness quality in the background. Flavor is all sweet malt, caramel, mollasses, up front, with candy sugar and dark fruits through the middle. Finishes with a long residuel candy sugar aftertaste. Perfect mellow/smooth mouthfeel. Doesn’t taste like 15.5% but it feels like it after 2 glasses. Very fine brew overall. Recommend trying every batch that comes out, as this is my third time rating this (2 draft/1bottle), and it had improved every time. Prostman (1076), Pennsylvania, USA Mar 3, 2005 This was a very smooth beer but the alcohol was definitely present in a good way. The beer really can warm you up on a cold winter’s night.
