COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Pours a red brown with a tan head and aroma of dried fruits and raisans. Taste is sweet, of dried fruits, raisans, caramel, roasted malt, and chocolate notes with a warming finish. First Eisbock I’ve ever had, very good

A - Pours a dark ruby brown with an active 1.5 finger beige head that sinks quickly S - Roasted sugary malt, prunes, raisins, molasses, peppery alcohol, toasted grain. T - Intense malt infused with dried cherries, prunes, raisins, apples, berries, with layers of rich caramel and toffee and toasted brown bread. Aftertaste is of nutty bread. M - Light side of full bodied due to the moderate carbonation. Just right. This is the good stuff. Rich intense but smooth malt profile. All the flavors melded into a well-rounded brew. Aroma: bready, rich roasted caramel, sweet malt, Flavor: sweet rich malt and caramel at first; finishes with burnt sugar and light molasses. Comment: full bodied, good carbonation. Best when chilled to cut the sweetness. Carbonation also helps with the mouthfeel.

Sweet grains in the nose, lots of caramel and berry flavors. A little sour. The appearance is dark ruby red. Good head level; thick and hazy. The flavor is sweet maltiness; does have a completely sweet finish. Borderline cloying. Leaves an aftertaste that is drier than, say, Spaten. The palate is thick and slick. The alcohol is not hidden at all.

Like a cough syrup but kinda thin on tongue but it smacks a wallop had at bier museum in Germany. Okay but nothing special. Carmel coffee syrup ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Smak och doft av malt, humle, kaffe och choklad. En aning för söt och alkholen slår igenom.

Bottled. Dark brown colour with a beige head that quickly diminishes. Aroma is toasty and spicy. Flavor os sweet, alcoholic, malty toasty, hints of chocolate and caramel. The final has a pleasant sweetess.

330 ml bottle from Neons. Pours a deep, rich nutty amber color with a minimal off-white head. Aroma of caramel and brown sugar, sweet sugary toasted notes, like marzipan, and toffee candy. Flavor of caramel and darker toasty malts, brown sugar, sweet roasted nuts, and a bit of an old earthy, woody note. Medium-bodied, with modest carbonation and a sweet, smooth mouthfeel. About what I expected. Seemed a little old, too, but the bartender poured it and pitched the bottle before I could see.

I poured an 11.2oz bottle into a snifter. There was no decipherable freshness date.

Appearance: Pours out a dark brown shade, but appears to be opaque black in the glass with ruby red highlights. Forms a relatively large, eggshell, foamy head which retains and laces well.

Smell: Strong alcohol presence, but distinct fruit as well. Similar to a flavored liqueur.

Taste: The eisbock is a style that’s hard to come by, but if you’re lucky enough to find one you’re usually in for a treat. Kulmbacher Eisbock definitely was for me as it’s comparable to a traditional barleywine as far as flavor goes, but with a thinner, slightly crisp body because it’s a lager. Dark fruits like red apple, cherry, fig and plum as well as toffee are all quite prominent. The alcohol is as well, but it’s not distracting and makes the beer drink like the true sipper it should be.

It’s a well balanced palette all around, too. Though definitely on the sweeter, maltier side, Kulmbacher Eisbock is not a sticky, syrupy mess. There is some residual flavor on the tongue, but it is not cloying or drying, but rather just "there." The taste is quite delicious, though not what I would consider among the best of the best. Still, you’re in for a treat if you drink this beer.

Drinkability: For a strong beer, Kulmbacher Eisbock is no challenge to drink at all. Though the 9.2% ABV potency is noticeable in the nose and in the taste, there’s no raw heat or burn in the drinking process. The mouthfeel is on the thicker side for sure, but soft and slightly crisp. Probably best enjoyed as a dessert or special occasion beverage, though.
