COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

On tap - Lake Flying Saucer Spring Beer Fest 2011. Clear amber with some beige head. Alcohol is appearent in the aroma and flavor but isn’t overpowering. Aromas of fruit and some vanilla - very thick and almost syrupy mouthfeel. Flavors continues to creep out as the beer warms. Great boozy fruit flavor with some chocolate and caramel. Very tasty!

Poured quickly but the head disappeared in a minute. Chocolate color. Aroma is velvety nutty malt and some spice. Maybe some old fashioned candy. Slightly oily medium mouthfeel leaning toward heavy. Awesome job hiding the 9.5% alcohol rating. This is really a wonderful beer, glad I stumbled across it.

330 mL bottle. (2009 vintage). Dark, clear, cola brown with a small head. Bread and berries in the aroma, along with the expected dark fruit and booze. Nice flavour, with bruised apple, caramel, prunes, dates, and booze being my first impressions. Body is solid without being heavy. Medium-light carbonation. A lovely sipper.

Picked this bottle up in Chicago when we were back for Christmas. Served in a wine glass. Pours a moderate amber-copper color with a pretty good off-white head. A bit of spotty lacing on the way down and a nice, thin collar around the edges of the beer. The nose is pretty sweet with some dark fruits and a touch of oxidation. Not all that much alcohol. The taste is a bit of caramelized malt with some fruit and quite a bit of sweetness. Not much booze comes through in the feel, though that might be because it’s quite sweet, bordering on cloying. Not a bad beer but half of this bottle was more than enough for me. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 01-24-2011

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 11.2oz bottle into a large snifter. Appearance: In the glass it looks dark brown with reddish highlights. It is topped by a small tan head that quickly fades to a light ring of foam. Lacing is minimal and very slick. Smell: The aroma is the star of the show and offers deep inviting layers of malty goodness. I get lots of sweet roasted malt, caramel and dark fruits like plum, figs and raisin with drop of molasses and rum like alcohol. Taste/Palate: Its flavor matches the aroma to a tee but comes off a little lighter than I had expected yet still full bodied. It brings all the wonderful layers of maltiness with a mellow warming abv. It finishes sweet but not in a heavy or cloying way and the palate is smooth and full yet still very drinkable for such a big beer. Notes: This is a very enjoyable beer with nice complexity and excellent drinkability.

Sweet and robust malt aroma. Clear amber color with a small white head. Light sweet beginning that builds in the finish and gets slightly bitter in the end.

12oz bottle, courtesy of drowland, pours with a light tan head. Sweet, boozy aroma, alcohol front and present. Interesting. This isn’t that bad for a drunk beer.
