COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

A dark amber pour with a frothy tan head. It has a toasty caramel aroma with a hint of alcohol. The medium to full body has a creamy texture with average carbonation. The taste is mildly sweet with slightly roasted finish.

Bottle from 3 Sons, clear brown with fragrance of malts and caramel, sweet and not too much play from alcohol. No bitter or iron notes. Plenty of candy and dried fruit. Nice head and lacing.

11.2oz bottle in a snifter. Pours dark brown with a thick, lacy, cream-colored head. Aroma of dark fruits, nuts, roasted malts, and some floral notes. Flavor about the same with a strong alcohol and grape note on the finish. Thicker than average, but nothing special. A good introduction to this style of beer.

Pours deep chestnut brown with a quickly dissipating light khaki head. Aroma has a clear yeast component just like in a normal bock. Nice caramel and nutty maltiness, a slight alcohol hint, perhaps a hint of cafe latte and cardboard. Taste is pretty much the same, but it drinks really easily with only small note of the alcohol. Hints of sweets and nuts. Really nice, better than expected.

Pours dark brown with a quick off-white head. Nose is mostly brown sugar, with a touch of hops, alcohol, and roastiness. Flavor is both fruity and roasty, with a slightly sour undertone to the dark malt. Hops are fairly subdued. Definately more yeast and malty assertiveness than is typically present in German styles (it’s more akin to Belgian ales) and is a well-balanced and generally good beer.

2003 bottle, fresh bottle. Surprisingly similar despite difference in age — less carbonation and less bitterness in the older bottle. Plus the aged beer displayed more dark fruit and was more sherry-like. Deep amber, approaching brown, body. Short, frothy tan head, mostly diminishing. Sweet, fruity aroma of caramel, molasses, brown sugar and toasted grain. Notes of sherry and alcohol in the aged beer. The flavor is heavily sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic. It finishes moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic and lightly bitter. Medium to full body, syrupy texture with lively carbonation in the fresher bottle and mild carbonation in the 2003. The fruity aroma is appealing and the beer hits the front of the tongue with a variety of flavors — dark, overripe fruits, bread, molasses. The finish, however, is sticky and too sweet for my tastes, aged or not.

330 ml bottle in Germany, I admit that I am no fan of this brewery but this was not bad at all. Pours dark brown in color with a bubbling, huge tan head. Aroma is sweet, with elements of rapsberry fruit and alcohol. Flavors are pretty straight-up, malty and sweet, with some deep almost smokey complexity. Alcohol is warming, but not too intense. Great stuff, overall.
