COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

This is quite a remarkable beer. It pours a deep, dark brown with a rich tan head that disappears quickly. This reminds me a lot of the Spaten Optimator, a dopplebock, but this beer has more spice, nuts, and complexity. The aroma is rich and sweet. Alcohol is barely noticeable in the aroma and more noticeable in the flavor. The palate is full and heavy. The flavor has brown sugar, nuts, and alcohol, and is quite sharp and bright overall. The flavor doesn’t linger long either. This is no doubt a great winter beer.

Wow. This has quite the kick to it. Dark fruits, ala figs and berries, chocolate. Complex with an alcoholic finish that isnt offensive. Great beer.

No good. Looked promising with a very deep red and an off white head. Eisbocks should be strong, yes, but they shouldn’t necessarily taste like rubbing alcohol. I see lots of other notes about fruits, caramel, molasses, etc...frankly, I couldn’t get past the apparent alcohol.

Snifter from bottle. A: sweet malt, chocolate, cinnamon, slight alcohol, and brown sugar. App: very nice dark brown, small light head that disperses quickly. T: alcohol up front, some sweetness from the malt in the middle, and slight alcoholly burn on the back. P: sensational, super bubbly, and an ever-lasting aftertaste.

Dark brown body, head disapeared after a few seconds. Fruity aromas, molasses flavor and malts, very complex.

Deilig øl, takk til Svend på Ølkonsortiet i Aalborg! Alkoholpreg, og mye maltsødme. Deilig ettersmak, "flytende fruktkake"...

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a slightly tan head. Nice fruity/malty aroma. Sweet taste of caramel, fruit, and slightly roasted malts. Nice finish.

UPDATED: OCT 23, 2005 Pours a beautiful copper color out of the bottle to pitch black in the glass. Small tan head. Nice caramel aroma with hints of raisin. Slight carbonation. A very nice sweet sipping brew. Definitely not a session beer.

Pours a deep, deep maroon. Smells of raisins and other dried fruit. Head evaporates in a blink of an eye, but is nice while it lasts. Warm feel in the mouth and sweet on the palate. Strong as all fuckin hell, but strangely it doesn’t taste too strong. Makes American brews like Ice House seem more like "Piss House". One word...Molasses

Bottle: A slightly sweet malty aroma not over powering. It poured a clean, clear medium brown wth a minimal head. The taste was superior, good malt character, but not overpowering not too sweet with a smooth finish. It’s a good thing I didn’t buy more or they may have all been gone in one sitting. "I’’ll be bock..."
