COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

Dark brown with a medium tan head. Sweet aroma of brown sugar and dark fruit. Flavor is sweet and with alcohol cutting in. Neither flavor is overpowering though. Medium body, syrupy and sticky. Nice throat warming from the alcohol.

I didn’t really know this was such a highly rated brew when I bought it and -more important- drank it. However I should not let that change my opinion of the brew. :-) Aroma is quite okay. Sweetish dark fruits, malty. Black coloured with a thin, off-white/brown head. Taste is quite sweet, caramel malty, dark fruity. Massive body and quite sticky. Alcohol noticeable everywhere. This is not really my cup of sticky sirup.

Clear dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is sweet, heavy malty and dried fruit. Flavor is rather sweet. Soft and smooth with a sweet finish. Warming alcohol. Great eisbock. 141210

UPDATED: APR 26, 2004 Pours dark brown. Medium tan head. WOW! Nose is rich and full of chocolate, caramel and malt. The taste reminds me of a chocolaty dessert. Very rich and malty. The chocolate comes through first and foremost along with the malt and a cake-like taste. Some notes of alcohol and vanilla along with molasses round it out. Exquisite. This is awesome! So glad I finally had this. This does, indeed, live up to the hype.

This bottled brew poured a large head of fine to medium sized light brown colored mostly diminishing bubbles that left behind a fair lace. The body is semi-opaque with a dark browm color and no visible carbonation. The aroma is very nice with a big brown beer smell and caramel notes. The mouth feel is vinuous yet smoothend in the finish fading to a nice caramel dark malt flavor. The flavor is smooth and very nice too. It has a vinuous dark malt flavor with a mild bite.

Dark brown with a fleeting tan head. Malty sweet smell of grapes and black licorice. Medium body with a slick mouthfeel. A very tasty taste mirrors the smell with black currants and molasses. Very easy drinking i could have pounded this beer. 6106

Very black color with a thin, tan head that disappears rapidly. Aroma is malty. Raisins. Smoked meats? Bacon popped to mind. The taste is very good. A deep malt lightly smoked. Slight caramel. The alcohol is disturbinly, and painfully, well hidden.

Dark ruby red edging into black pour with a thin, tight off-white head, decent lacing. Aroma reminds me of kid’s cereal - the sweet fruity kind - like Fruit Loops or Fruity Pebbles. Same fruitiness carries over to the flavor. Hints of cherries, yeast and alcohol. A bit of chocolate also makes its way in the back end as well. Mouthfeel is slightly harsh as the alcohol makes its presence known. Might make a good winter warmer.
