COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The ice bock, also known as "Bayrisch Gefrorns", owes its discovery to a coincidence. According to the chronicles of the Kulmbacher brewery, some time around 1900 an apprentice forgot on a cold winter day to carry two barrels of bock beer into the brewery cellar. The barrels stayed outside, were covered by ice and snow and weren’t discovered until the following spring. The barrels had burst and the apprentice was reprimanded. But the carelessness was a stroke of luck because under the thick ice coat, a bock beer extract remained, strong tasting and high in alcoholic content.
Even if the dark, tasty speciality is not produced in this spectacular way anymore, the chance that gave birth to this beer became a tradition. Today this beer rarity is brewed in a modern brewing and freezing process, but the incomparable taste is still the same and can always be enjoyed in winter months.

2004 bottle. Pours brown with a trace of a head that doesn’t stick around very long. Smells of sugar, dark fruit, some splashes of matl. Taste is pronounced sweetness with lots of dark fruity elements. Served as an after dinner cordial. Very nice!

330ml bottle (Berlin) - shared by mjs - thanks!
Deep red, no head. Sweet bocky aroma - smells sticky. Smooth soft palate, some crisp carbonation is nice. Bananaey retronasals. Taste also quite bananaey, and vey bocky - full of sweet malts. A touch alcoholic, but nowhere near 9.2%. Compared to my previous eisbock this is very mellow, and not harsh at all. Great balance, but mostly malt based. The hops are a little papery, but not offensively so, in fact they’re quite fresh and almost buddy. Nice one.

UPDATED: MAR 4, 2006 6 months bottle. Big props to TAR Finely laced thin off-white head over a dark molasses brown hue. Deeply rich aroma, sweet as expected, but bearing woody and lots of smoked undertones. The great chocolatey malt is intertwined with the candyish toffee. Subdued hop profile complements the malt fest with dignity. In one word, the aroma is effective. A first sip reveals its awe-inspiring complexity. This is rich and decadent, smoky with superb chocolate flavors. Understated fruitiness, maple and mildly bitter tobacco finish. Medium to full bodied with appropriate carbonation, rather restrained not to disturb and to let the malt expands as it deserves to. Wonderful and extremely contemplative lager, not unlike celebrator.

This beer kind of misfired for me. It was freshly delivered from Boston, thank you Clarkvv. A nice brown colour, but kind of sourish, some malts and toffee and stuff to sweeten some toastedness, lacking complexity to go with dinner. The Niagara Eisbock versions are sure a whole lot better.

Bottle from State Line. Deep brownish pour with 1-finger khaki head. Aroma of Roasty malt, brown sugar, dark fruit, nuts, cacao. Tastes roasty malty, with blackberry, plum, cherry, brown sugar, and hop notes. Nice complexity and palate heft, with well hidden alcohol. This one is a standout.

Poured a deep iced-tea like brown with a 1/4" head that slowly receded to form a thin ring around the top. Beer was lightly carbonated, and had an aroma consisting of raisins, dates, cocoa, and some alcohol. Roasted malts were very pleasant in the taste, and were well-blended with some dark fruit, vanilla, and alcohol. Smooth, non-cloying mouthfeel. Alcohol comes through as the beer warms. The beer is warm all the way down, with roasted malts in the aftertaste. This is a big and well-crafted beer!

Quack-Duck (5601) - Down South, GERMANY - AUG 8, 2008
bottle. Deep dark amber-brown colour, small beige head. A malty sweetness dominates, balanced by some fruity flavours of plum and raisins. Not too sweet. Shy hoppy flavours in the finish.
